The Periodic Table S1 Chemistry Introduction to Chemistry

Learning outcomesSuccess criteria Understand what the Periodic Table is. You can state what type of substance is shown in the Periodic Table. Be able to use the Periodic Table to obtain information about the names and symbols of elements. You can write the symbol for an element, ensuring that capital and lower case letters are used correctly. You can name an element from its symbol.

Symbols Name the elements with the following symbols: –O–O –Al –Ti –K–K –Au

Names Write the symbols for the following elements: –Carbon –Calcium –Tungsten –Iron –Silver

Can you write your name using the symbols of elements? How many different words can you write in five minutes using the symbols of elements? Which are the only letters not to appear in the Periodic Table?

Which element is the first alphabetically? Which element is the last alphabetically? What do you think are the top 10 most common elements in the Earth’s crust?

Top 10 elements in the Earth’s crust 1.Oxygen 2.Silicon 3.Aluminium 4.Iron 5.Calcium 6.Sodium 7.Magnesium 8.Potassium 9.Titanium 10.Hydrogen

FireworksFireworks …and the chemical elements

Every 5th of November tonnes of fireworks are set off in the UK. The tradition arose because nearly 400 years ago, Guy Fawkes and others tried to explode barrels of gunpowder under the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster where Members of Parliament (MPs) meet. Their aim was to kill King James I and destroy Parliament.

After a tip off, King James ordered the cellar to be searched. Guy Fawkes was found laying fuses to gunpowder barrels. He was arrested and taken to the Tower of London, where he was tortured. On 30th January 1606 Guy Fawkes and the others were beheaded for treason, which means 'crime against the country'.

When the public heard that the King and Parliament had been threatened but were safe, bonfires were lit in celebration. When a new session of parliament starts, the cellar is searched - this tradition continues today. Our celebration of Guy Fawkes's arrest lights the skies on 5th November.

Deliberate Mistakes: Elements Elements are substances made up of only one atom. There are about 100 elements in the world such as gold, bronze and carbon dioxide. Each element can be represented by a name and symbol. Hydrogen has the symbol H, sodium the symbol S and magnesium the symbol MG. K is the symbol for potassium. All the elements are arranged in a chart called the Periodic Table.
