INTRODUCTION TO THE PERIODIC TABLE

TODAY’S PERIODIC TABLE The elements in the modern periodic table (one used today) are still organized by increasing atomic number The rows or PERIODS of elements have properties that change gradually and predictably—they are labeled 1-7 The columns or GROUPS of elements have similar chemical or physical properties—they are labeled 1-18

ZONES ON THE PERIODIC TABLE The periodic table can be divided into sections: *Groups 1 & 2 and Groups 13-18 are the metals, nonmetals and metalloids *Groups 3-12 are TRANSITION ELEMENTS— all metals *INNER TRANSITION ELEMENTS are placed below the main table— lanthanide and actinide series

TIME TO TALK With the people at your table, discuss how the periodic table is organized today.

ELEMENT KEY Each element is represented on the periodic table by a box called the ELEMENT KEY Shows you the name of the element, its atomic number, its symbol and its average atomic mass Some will include a logo that tells whether the element is a solid, liquid or gas at room temperature

SYMBOLS FOR THE ELEMENTS The symbols for the elements are either one- or two- letter abbreviations, often based on the element name—the 1 st letter is ALWAYS capitalized and any other letters are ALWAYS lowercase Sometimes the symbols don’t match the name—the symbol might come from the Greek or Latin names for the elements Newly synthesized elements are given a temporary name and 3-letter symbol that’s related to the element’s atomic number

TIME TO TALK With the people at your table, discuss how to write symbols for elements in the periodic table. When the symbols don’t match the name, where does the name come from?

ASSIGNMENT Complete the “Advertise an Element” activity Completed assignment due tomorrow
