Meaning of “Peace” 1. World thinks of peace as “contentment” a. No financial burdens b. Own a nice home in a quiet country setting c. Enjoy company of family and friends d. We adopt the attitude of “live and let live”. c. In other words, we learn to tolerate each other. d. This involves compromise with the enemy in order to have “peace”. e. But this is not the peace that Christ was talking about!! (CLICK) 3. Jesus said in Jn. 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” a. This kind of peace is different than the kind the world thinks about. (CLICK) b. Hebrew word for peace is “Shalom.” (1) This was their word of farewell, and it never was used to mean the mere absence of difficulty. (2) It meant that which was positive. It means completeness and wholeness. (3) Shalom means everything which makes for a man's highest good. c. How do They Make Peace Cannot have peace at the price of giving up truth “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” Jas. 3:17 II. HOW DO THEY MAKE PEACE ? 1. God does not want us to have peace at the price of truth 2. To accept false teaching or error for the sake of peace is wrong! And we cannot do that a. Jas.3:17 “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” b. Purity comes before peace!
12
Make Peace How do They First - reconciled to God
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” Rom. 5:1 “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” Rom. 5:11 B. Before we can be peacemakers with our fellowman, we must first be Reconciled to God 1. A peacemaker must first make peace with God 2. Do this by being born again of water and spirit - John 3:3 – thru obedient faith and baptism 3. Atonement - at/one/ment - back in the right relationship with God. 4. Rom. 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” 5. Rom. 5:11 “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” 6. So only after we have made peace with God can we go on to make peace with our fellow man
13
Reconciled to our In the Church Fellowman
1 Thess. 5:13 Be at peace among yourselves Prov. 6: Hates “sows discord” Prov. 26:20-21 strife ceases Jas. 4:1 your desires for pleasure Matt. 5:23-24 Repair breaches C. Then we can be Reconciled to our fellowman, so how can we be reconciled and live a peace with our fellow man? 1. Live in peace with each other in the church: a. It is God's will that we live and work together as brethren in peace with one another. b. I Thes. 5:13 “...Be at peace among yourselves.” c. We must warn of false teachers and false doctrines so they will not cause strife and division!! d. Pro. 6:16-19 God hates some things (1) He calls them an abomination (2) One of these is “he that sows discord among brethren.” v. 19 e. What can we do to ensure peace in the congregation? (1) Refuse to add fuel to the fires of contention (a) Pro. 26:20-21 “Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases. As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife.” (b) Peacemakers do not keep spreading information that can only add more fuel to the fire (2) Don't be Self-centered (a) Jas. 4:1 “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?” (b) Thinking too much about ourselves causes us to exaggerate our smallest slights (3) Actively seek to repair breaches in your relationships with brothers and sisters if we have issues with them (a) If you are aware of a problem, don't ignore it, but do something about it. (b) Matt. 5:23-24 “Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (c) Conflict and Strife in a congregation is not what we need or what God desires. f. Strife in a church does a great deal of hurt! Children of God are makers of peace - breakers of peace belong to another family!

One Lord, one faith, one baptism, and 2 coal piles
Reconciled to our Fellowman In the Church One Lord, one faith, one baptism, and 2 coal piles Ill. Years ago a congregation had a faction or split back in They agreed that one group would use the building in the morning and the other group in the evening. But one side thought the other side used more of the coal than they Did in order to heat the building. So they agreed to have two coal piles. One of the children noticed the friction among the members and wrote this note on the chalk board “One Lord, one faith, one baptism, and two coal piles!” I think the congregation got the message from that young boy...brethren we should be one!
15
Reconciled to our In the Home Fellowman
Prov. 15:17 “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fatted calf with hatred Ps. 133:1 “How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” 2. Live in Peace in the home. a. Domestic tranquility - peace at home - is the desire of God – But peace is more than just tolerating one another (1) When there is constant friction, fussing and fighting then somebody's heart and life is not right with God. (2) Domestic tranquility does not come from having all the latest Conveniences, nor from having a lot of money and college degrees. b. Cornbread and potatoes in a small little cabin with love is better than a big fancy feast in a beautiful mansion filled with hatred. c. Solomon said in Prov. 15:17 “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a fatted calf with hatred.” d. Ps. 133:1 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” e. God wants us to have peace in the home
16
Reconciled to our With all men Fellowman
Rom. 12:18 “If it be possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” 1 Pet. 3: “seek peace and pursue it” Prov. 16:7 “…be at peace with him.” 3. But He also wants us to live in peace with all men a. Rm. 12:18 “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” b. I Pet. 3 says to be happy we must “seek peace, and pursue it.” c. Pro. 16:7 “When a man's ways please Jehovah, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” D. Evangelism is for the peacemaker 1. Teach others the truth - the gospel, the good news 2. Then they can be at peace with God and their fellow man
17
The Blessing for The Peacemaker Why ?
“Sons of God” Why ? III. THE BLESSING FOR PEACEMAKERS A. “They shall be called sons of God” 1. When a person resembles another person they are often called the son of that person. 2. Sons of Abraham are those people who have the faith of Abraham. 3. Children of the devil are those people who have devilish qualities. 4. And in the Bible, sons of God are those people who imitate God
18
Peacemakers are called Troublemakers are the devil’s kinfolks
Children of God God is a God of peace - Rom.15:33 Sends peace through His Son -Lk.2:13,14 Savior is Prince of Peace - Isa.9:6 Gospel is Gospel of Peace - Rom. 10:15 B. Why are peacemakers called the children of God? 1. Their God is a God of peace - Rm. 15:33 - “Now the God of peace be with you all.” 2. He sends peace to men in the person of his Son. 3. Because their Savior is the Prince of Peace a. Is. 9:6 He is charged with the mission and message of reconciliation between God and man b. II Cor. 5:19 “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.” 4. Because their gospel is the gospel of peace - When men accept it in fullness of faith, they find peace. 5. Because they give their lives to the work of God, to the work of the Savior, to the work of the gospel. 6. Because peace is so much a part of the character of God no man could be his son who did not share this attribute. C. The Opposite 1. “Woe to the troublemakers, for they shall be called the children of Satan.” 2. Contentious people, those who like to argue, those who love an argument and fuss are troublemakers. 3. Pro. 6:19 “ ... and he that sows discord among brethren.” 4. Just as peacemakers are God's kinfolks and shall be called the children of God, so troublemakers are the devil's kinfolks, for “he that commits sin is of the devil.” 1 Jn. 3:8 Troublemakers are the devil’s kinfolks
19
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9

“In the name of Christ, refrain!”
Story of Telemaus This is supposedly a historically accurate account what I am about to tell you. Telemaus was a Christian who lived in the 4th century Italy. At the time of his adult age, gladiators were still battling in the coliseum. Being a man of peace, he was so fed up with this killing that he decided to travel to Rome. When he arrived in the city, people were thronging in the streets. He asked why all the excitement and was told that this was the day that the gladiators would be fighting and killing each other in the coliseum, the day of the games. He thought to himself, "Four centuries after Christ and they are still killing each other, for enjoyment?" He ran to the coliseum and heard the gladiators saying, "Hail to Ceasar, we die for Ceasar" and he thought, "this isn't right." He jumped over the railing and went out into the middle of the field, got between two gladiators, held up his hands and said "In the name of Christ, refrain." The crowd protested and began to shout, "Run him through, Run him through." A gladiator came over and hit him in the stomach with the back of his sword. It sent him sprawling in the sand. He got up and ran back and again said, "In the name of Christ, refrain." The crowd continued to chant, "Run him through." One gladiator came over and plunged his sword through the little monk's stomach and he fell into the sand, which began to turn crimson with his blood. One last time he gasped out, "In the name of Christ refrain." A hush came over the 80,000 people in the coliseum. Soon a man stood and left, then another and more, and within minutes all 80,000 had emptied out of the arena. It was the last known gladiatorial contest in the history of Rome. “In the name of Christ, refrain!”
