SceneScene A section presenting events that occur in one place at one time. ActAct A major section of a play made up of more than one scene.

DIALOGUE a conversation between two or more characters

MONOLOGUE a speech by one character in a play to other characters

EXPOSITION the part of the story that introduces the characters, the setting, and the basic situation

CENTRAL CONFLICT The main problem that the character sets out to solve throughout the entire story plot

RISING ACTION all complications and events leading to the climax/turning point

CLIMAX/TURNING POINT The point after the rising action when the audience senses the main character has solved the central conflict the action “turns” and no longer rises (leads to falling action) may be suspenseful main characters often experience inner change

FALLING ACTION the downward spiral of events that follows the climax/turning point

RESOLUTION The final outcome for the main characters is revealed

Short Story “It’s the monster! It’s the monster!” Tommy shouted in fright. “We may need this,” Don stated holding up his shotgun. “A shotgun?” Steve questioned as he pulled the gun out of Don’s hand. Drama Tommy (shouting, frightened). It’s the monster! It’s the monster! Don. We may need this. Steve. A shotgun? (He pulls it out of Don’s hand.) (Don Martin joins them, carrying a shotgun. He holds it up.)
