Portuguese, Spanish, French, Swiss These words are always adjectives Don’t add –s for plural Don’t use without the: The Portuguese usually wear moustaches. The French are famous for their grumpiness.

Portuguese, Spanish, French, Swiss To talk about one person from these countries, do NOT say a Japanese, a French, say a Japanese man/woman/person, a Frenchman, a Frenchwoman, a French person, an Englishman, an English woman, etc.

American, Canadian, Greek, Thai These words can be adjectives or nouns Use –s for plural The isn’t mandatory: (The) Italians like pizza. (The) Americans don’t know much Geography.

Some countries have a specific noun for the people who are born there: Nationality adjective Danish Swedish Polish Spanish Turkish Scottish Finnish The person who is born there (noun) a Dane a Swede a Pole a Spaniard a Turk a Scot a Finn

Specific Groups of People The poor The unemployed The homeless The old The rich The illiterate Treat these adjectives as Portuguese, Spanish... (No –s for plural and always preceded by the)

One, ones Use these words to avoid repeating a noun that is implied in the speech: (At a car park) This car is mine. Which one is yours? (At a store) I would like to have a blue T-shirt and I also I want a red one.
