THE IDEAL ASSISTANT COACH Hard working, willing to help out. Trustworthy (Extremely important!!) Knowledge of the game Can teach the game Works well with others Understands their role and ACCEPTS their role on the staff.

DEFINING THE ROLES Head Coach clearly defines expectations for Assistant Coaches. Get Assistants to be “coaches” not “players” on the ice. Their role is to instruct the players. Provide growth opportunities for Assistant Coaches. Agree to disagree (in private!!!)

TAKING/GIVING RESPONSIBILITY Take on responsibility for pre-season, in- season, and post-season tasks. Keep learning about the game and how to teach it to your players. Take leadership roles outside your own program (i.e. Coach in off-season MGHCA programs, MN Hockey programs, youth association, etc.)

THE TASK LIST Head Coach prepares task list. Review list to give all coaches opportunity to contribute. Along with responsibility comes accountability – Do your job! Reward all coaches for a job well done!!!

SAMPLE TASKS HEADASST.ADMIN.N/ATASK COMPLETE SAFETY/INVENTORY CHECK ON EQUIPMENT OFF-ICE TRAINING, WEIGHTLIFTING, ETC, EMAIL RATINGS OF OFFICIALS TO MSHSL AFTER GAMES PREPARE DAILY PRACTICE PLANS REPORT GAMES SCORES AND STATS TO MEDIA FOLLOWING GAMES PREPARE BUDGETS, PURCHASE ORDERS, ETC.

SUMMARY CREATE A COHESIVE STAFF BY: 1.Have the same goals. 2.Always show a united front. 3.Trust one another. 4.Respect abilities and contributions of all coaches. 5.Use the talents of all the coaches. 6.Have fun, enjoy the opportunity!
