2 JULES VERNE Born Feb. 8, 1828 in Nantes, France Died Mar. 24, 1905 in Amiens, France He was a French author who was one of the first to ever write Sci Fi. His novels included Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, and Around the world in Eighty Days.

3 H. G. WELLS Born Sept. 21, 1866 in Bromley, Kent, England Died Aug. 13, 1946 in London, England He was an English writer who is remembered for his sci fi novels: The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The First Men in the Moon, and The Island of Dr. Moreau.

4 EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS Born Sept. 1, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois Died Mar. 19, 1950 in Encino, California Best known for his TARZAN novels, and for his MARS novels with his hero John Carter.

5 J.R.R. TOLKIEN Born January 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa Died September 1973 Bournemouth, England He is most remembered for THE HOBBIT and LORD OF THE RINGS.

6 CLIFFORD D. SIMAK Born Aug 3, 1904 in Millville, Wisconsin Died Apr. 25, 1988 Minneapolis, Minnesota He won three Hugo awards and one Nebula. In 1977 he was named the third Grand Master of Science Fiction by the SFWA.

7 ROBERT A. HEINLEIN Born July, 7, 1907 in Butler, Missouri Died May 8, 1988 His most famous novels were Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough for Love. If you love science fiction, these are a must. You can order them from Amazon.com

8 ANDRE NORTON Born Feb. 17, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio Died Mar. 17, 2005 She was the first woman to be awarded the Gandalf Grand Master Award from the WSFA in 1977. In 1983 she won the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the SFWA

10 Arthur C. Clarke Born: Dec. 16, 1917 in Somerset, England Died: Mar 19, 08 in Colombo, Sri Lanka He is best remembered for his novel, Childhoods End. Also, have you seen the movie “2001: A space Odyssey?” Clarke wrote the novel and helped with the screenplay.

11 PHILLIP JOSE FARMER Born January 26, 1918 in in Terre Haute, Indiana.. He has spent much of his life in Peoria, illinois, where he currently lives. He is known for his sci fi novels: The River Boat Series

12 ISAAC ASIMOV Born Jan. 2, 1920 in Russia Died Apr. 6, 1992 in New York, N.Y. He is best remembered for his science fiction novels: “The Foundation Series.” He, Arthur Clarke, and Robert Heinlein were considered the “big three” in sci fi writing. He is one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited more than 500 books.

13 RAY BRADBURY Born Aug. 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois Best known for his sci fi novel THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES

14 FRANK HERBERT Born Oct. 8, 1920 in Tacoma, Washington Died Feb. 11, 1986 in Madison, Wisconsin Best remembered for his novel, DUNE. It sold more copies than any other sci fi novel in existence.

15 PHILLIP K. DICK Born Dec. 16, 1928 Chicago, Illinois Died Mar. 2, 1982 (age 53) Santa Anna, California He had published 44 novels and a 121 short stories. Ten of his stories were made into movies, including Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly, Minority Report, Paycheck (one of my favorites), Next, Screamers, and The Adjustment Bureau

16 ROBERT SILVERBERG Born Jan. 15, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York He has won multiple Hugo and Nebula awards for best science fiction.

17 ROBERT E. HOWARD Born Jan. 22, 1906 in Peaster, TX Died Jun. 11, 1936 Died from a self- inflicted gunshot wound. Most remembered for his CONAN stories.

18 LARRY NIVEN Born Apr. 30, 1938 in Los Angeles, CA. He is best known for his novel, RINGWORLD, which won him the Hugo, Locus, Ditmar, and Nebula awards.
