1
HISTORY OF THE COMPUTER COLBY B. 5 th PERIOD
2
Invention info. The “computer” was discovered in 1822 by Englishman Charles Babbage, who is known as "the father of the Computer". They called it the “difference engine”. This machine used the decimal numbers system and was powered by cranking a handle.
3
“debug” Debugging is a methodical process of finding and reducing the number of Bugs, or defects, in a computer program or a piece of electronic hardware.
4
How did internet start? Tim Berners-Lee was working in CERN, a physics lab in Switzerland, when he became frustrated at the fact that he had to individually log onto different super- computers to get the information he wanted. He then decided to make a system that would transport information from computer to computer, regardless of the platform.
5
Analytical engine The analytical engine, an important step in the history of computers, was the design of a mechanical general-purpose computer by English mathematician Charles Babbage. In its logical design the machine was essentially modern, anticipating the first completed general- purpose computers by about 100 years. It was first described in 1837.
6
The tabulating machine The tabulating machine was an electrical device designed to assist in summarizing information and, later, accounting. Invented by Herman Hollerith, the machine was developed to help process data for the 1890 U.S. Census. It spawned a larger class of devices known as unit record equipment and the data processing industry.
7
E.N.I.A.C Short for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, was the first general- purpose, electronic computer. It was a Turing-complete, digital computer capable of being reprogrammed to solve a full range of computing problems. ENIAC was designed to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory.
8
Program A computer program is a set of instructions for a computer to perform a specific task. Programs generally fall into these categories applications, utilities and surfaces.
9
TRANSISTOR A Transistor is an electronic device which amplifies electrical signals, or acts as a switch. Most of the research on Transistors was performed by Shockley in 1947.
10
First microcomputer In 1975, Ed Roberts, the "father of the microcomputer" designed the first microcomputer, the Altair 8800, which was produced by Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS).
11
Binary system the binary system underlies modern technology of electronic digital computers. Computer memory comprises small elements that may only be in two states - off/on.
