Earth’s Atmosphere
2
Troposphere Lowest layer 6-10 miles high We live in this layer 6-10 miles from Earth Weather, wind, clouds, Jet stream Jet stream
3
Stratosphere 10-30 miles high Includes ozone layer to protect life Slows radiation Higher temperature than troposphere troposphere
4
Mesosphere 30 to 50 miles high Colder than Stratosphere Meteors disintegrate in this layer this layer
5
Thermosphere 50-350 miles high, thin ozone layer 2000 degrees C. Also called Ionosphere, atoms have electrical atoms have electrical charges. charges.
6
Exosphere Unstable molecules escape into space

The Big Picture Why do we care that the earth has different layers? http://academic.cengage.com/biology/discipl ine_content/animations/sun_to_earth.html http://academic.cengage.com/biology/discipl ine_content/animations/sun_to_earth.html http://academic.cengage.com/biology/discipl ine_content/animations/sun_to_earth.html

Convection Convection is the transfer of heat by the actual movement of the heated material. Convection Currents are what causes weather

Density how much something of a set volume weighs. This is generally measured by taking a cubic centimeter of a substance. So from the above examples it is easy to see that some of the cubes weigh more than others, even though they all take up the same amount of space. This agrees with our experience. We know that a huge block of foam is easier to lift than the same size block of wood or metal. Now we can see that the foam block is less dense than the others, making it easier to lift.
