Online Resources for Geoscience Instructors at Two-Year Colleges J.R. McDaris, K. Larsen, E. Baer, R. Blodgett, J. Hodder, R.H. Macdonald, K. Kraft, M. Maier Teaching Resources and Perspectives This area of the website organizes the wealth of materials developed by the contributing projects along a number of themes important in and for two-year colleges Teaching Introductory Classes Students’ Mathematics Preparation Teaching in the Field Research Experiences Ready-to-go Lessons and Activities Perspectives of Other Faculty Two-year colleges (2YCs) play a major role in geoscience education. In the U.S., nearly half of the students who take introductory geoscience do so at a 2YC. Teaching at 2YCs presents unique opportunities and challenges to instructors, yet materials designed specifically for instructors at these institutions can be difficult to find and instructors at 2YCs often feel isolated. To support instructors in teaching geosciences at the 2YC level, the Geoscience in Two-Year Colleges (Geo2YC) website provides integrated access to all resources on teaching geoscience at the 2YC level developed by projects hosted on SERC websites. http:// serc.carleton.edu/geo2yc/index.html Faculty Careers in Two-year Colleges Those interested in learning more about teaching at a two- year college can read career profiles of faculty at two-year colleges and find out more about the faculty job search process and interviews at community colleges. This page highlights resources that can help prospective or current faculty make the most of their career. Preparing for a 2YC Job Search and Interview Career profiles of other 2YC faculty members around the country Opportunities for Professional Development Workforce Development The first year of the SAGE 2YC project has produced a suite of resources on using two-year colleges to strengthen and develop the geoscience workforce with more under construction. Geoscience Careers: Where are your students going? Career Profiles Geoscience Employment Trends Career Resources available from Professional Societies Competencies, Skills, and Knowledge Geospatial Technology Competency Model Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired by Employers Strengthening Workforce Preparation Across Programs Geoscience Transfer Programming (in development) Geotechnician Workforce Programs (in development) Contributing Projects The website draws together resources from a number of sources. These Contributing Projects have collectively developed an extensive body of knowledge to aid two-year college educators both in teaching and collaborating with their peers. Workshops and Events Between them, the contributing projects have and continue to run workshops and events as a way of conducting professional development for two-year college faculty, as well as providing a mechanism for bringing together 2YC and 4YC faculty for collaboration and sharing of insights and ideas. These events are also a group platform from which the 2YC faculty community can advocate on large, national issues. This work is supported by NSF Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE 1122592, 1122640, 1122660, 1122737) and Geosciences Directorate (GEO 0939671) and by the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
