1 Sexually Transmitted Diseases
HIV/AIDS

2 MYTHS OF STDs True or False
Most people with an STD experience painful symptoms. Birth control pills prevent the spread of STDs. Douching will cure an STD. Abstinence is the best way to prevent STDs. If you get an STD once, and are treated, you can’t get it again. A person does not need to see a doctor if she/he notices sores on his/her genitals once, but then they go away. Condoms help prevent the spread of STDs

3 How well do you know the 63 people you had sex with last night?

4 STDs STDs are diseases and infections which are capable of being spread from person to person through: sexual intercourse oral-genital contact or in non-sexual ways. IV drug

5 Symptoms What are the symptoms? How would I know if I have been infected? Sores (either painful or painless) Blood in urine Burning sensation when urinating Rashes Itching Bumps Warts Unusual discharge

6 Chlamydia Bacterial Four million new cases occur each year
SYMPTOMS: fever, weight loss for no reason, swollen glands, fatigue, diarrhea, white spots on the mouth. FEMALE SYMPTOMS: 80% show no symptoms Vaginal discharge (white or grey) or burning with urination Lower abdominal pain Bleeding between menstrual periods. Low-grade fever (later symptom) MALE SYMPTOMS: 50% show no syptoms Discharge from the penis and/or burning when urinating Burning and itching around the opening of the penis Pain and swelling in the testicles Low –grade fever (associated with epididymitis – inflammation of the testicles)

7 Chlamydia Complications Chlamydia May Increase a Woman's Risk of Cervical Cancer
It is a common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and fallopian tube scarring which subsequently can lead to infertility and ectopic pregnancies. Infants of infected mothers can develop dangerous eye infections during birth, if left untreated.

8 Gonorrhea Bacterial Now the most common STD in America
Each year approximately 650,000 people in the United States are infected with gonorrhea People get gonorrhea from close sexual contact (anal sex, oral sex., and vaginal). Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to child during birth. Gonorrhea infection can spread to other unlikely parts of the body

9 Gonorrhea

10 Symptoms of Gonorrhea Appear 5-7 days or can take up to 30 days to appear sore or red throat if you have gonorrhea in the throat from oral sex rectal pain blood and pus in bowel movements if you have gonorrhea in therectum from anal sex.

11 FEMALE SYMPTOMS: 80% show notice no symptoms
Symptoms may show up 2-21 days after having sex May notice a yellow or white discharge from the vagina May be a burning or pain when urinating Bleeding between periods Heavier and more painful periods Cramps or pain in the lower abdomen, sometimes with nausea or fever MALE SYMPTOMS: Yellow or white drip/discharge from penis Burning or pain when urinating Frequent urinating Swollen testicles

12 Gonorrhea Complications
Causes damage to the urogenital system of both men and women, frequently leading to infertility. Most common in the genital system, but can also infect the eyes, throat, and rectum. If left untreated it can cause a form of blood poisoning that can lead to arthritis, skin problems and heart and brain infections. Babies born to infected mothers can develop blindness due to infection of the eyes during birth (hence the requirement of most states that infants' eyes be treated with antibiotics after birth).

13 Syphilis The long range effects can be very serious, including death.
In the United States, an estimated 70,000 new cases of syphilis in adults passed from person to person through direct contact with a syphilis sore Sores mainly occur on the external genitalia, vagina, anus, or rectum. Sores can also occur on the lips and in the mouth. Transmission of the organism occurs during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

14 Symptoms – Stage 1 Symptoms usually appear 10-90 days after contact.
An infected person gets a sore (chancre), which may be painful at the point of contact (mouth, anus, rectum, throat or the sex organ). The chancre is usually firm, round, small, and painless. It appears at the spot where the bacterium entered the body. The chancre lasts 1-5 weeks and heals on its own. This will disappear on its own, but may last 4-6 weeks. In the female, the chancre is often internal and cannot be seen.

15 Syphilis – 1st Stage

16 Secondary Stage lasts 3-6 weeks.
After the chancre comes a copper-colored skin rash which may appear on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, or in more severe cases covers the entire body. The rash may be accompanied by fever, headaches, indigestion, loss of appetite, or loss of hair in spots over the scalp.

17 Secondary Stage

18 Third Stage – Latent Period
All symptoms disappear so that the victim thinks he/she is cured. If not received treatment the bacterium remains in the body and begins to damage the internal organs including the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints.

19 Fourth Stage - Tertiary
The results of the internal damage from the 3rd stage shows up many years later. Ten, twenty, even thirty years after the initial infection - sudden heart attack, failure of vision, loss of motor coordination or mental disturbances.

20 Syphilis Complications
Effects of Syphilis Untreated syphilis can eventually lead to brain damage, psychosis, heart disease, organ damage, paralysis, blindness and death. In pregnant women, it can lead to miscarriage as well as severe birth defects.

21 Herpes Symptoms usually show 2-20 days after contact.
May be extremely painful or very mild. “outbreaks” of blisters and ulcers. Once infected with HSV, people remain infected for life. Stress, bruising, chaffing, or a woman’s period may cause an onset of the disease. FEMALE SYMPTOMS: Blisters in or around the vagina, fever and headaches. MALE SYMPTOMS: Small sore or cluster of blisters on the penis.

22 Herpes

23 HSV-2 Complications Genital herpes cannot be completely cured.
It may cause cervical cancer in women. A pregnant woman with active herpes can infect her baby during delivery. To prevent herpes in the newborn, a mother may have to have her baby C-Section. A baby who survives severe infection usually suffers physical or mental damage.

24 Genital Warts / Veniral Warts
Growths that appear on the vagina or penis, near the anus, and sometimes in the throat. They are caused by viruses and spread through sexual contact. The virus that causes genital warts is spread by vaginal or anal intercourse and by oral sex. Warts may appear within several weeks after sex with a person who has HPV; or they may take months or years to appear; or they may never appear. A person can be infected and pass on the virus without knowing it. Approximately 5.5 million new cases of sexually transmitted HPV (one third of all new STDs) occur in the U.S. each year, with at least 20 million people currently infected. Three out of four Americans between the ages of 15 and 49 have been infected with genital HPV in their lifetimes.

25 Symptoms Usually the warts look like tiny cauliflowers, but sometimes they are flat. The warts may cause itching, burning and some pain, but often don’t cause any pain at all. Warts may be inside the vagina or on the cervix, or in the rectum or throat, so you might not notice them. They might also be so small that you cannot see them.

26 Genital Warts Complications
Has been associated with precancerous and cancerous cell changes on the cervix or other genital areas. If left untreated, can block the opening to the urethra, vagina or anus, causing great discomfort.

27 Pubic Lice = Crabs Pubic lice are called “crabs” because they look like crabs. Crabs are frequently the color and size of small freckles. These very small lice (crabs) usually attack the sexual (pubic) areas of the body. Found under arms, eyelashes, moustaches. Spread through direct physical contact. Close body contact with an infected person. SYMPTOMS: A terrible, persisting itch in the genital, rectal (sexual) area.

28 Crabs – under microscope

29 Crabs Symptoms Although some people infected with pubic lice have no symptoms, others may experience considerable itching around the genitals. You may see light-brown insects the size of a pinhead moving on the skin or oval eggs attached to your body hair. The main symptom of scabies is itching, especially at night. A rash may appear in the folds of skin between the fingers or on the wrists, elbows, abdomen, or genitals.

30 Crabs Treatment The most effective treatments include shampoos and creams. Follow directions carefully. The infestation may be stubborn, and you may need to repeat the treatment. Avoid close contact with others if you have scabies or pubic lice. Wash clothes and bed linen in hot water, or dry-clean or press them with a very hot iron. If you have scabies or pubic lice, be sure to tell your sex partner. Anyone with whom you've had close contact or who has shared your bed linen, clothes, or towels should be treated, even if they don't have an itch or rash.

31 Crabs Prevention Scabies and pubic lice are transmitted through contact with an infected area on another person or through contact with infested materials such as sheets and towels. The best way to protect yourself is to know your partner's sexual history and to dry clean materials that you think may carry scabies or pubic lice.

32 Trichomoniasis An estimated 5 million new cases occur each year in women and men. Occurs in vagina of women so may be sexually transmitted to men using infected washcloths and towels. It is transmitted to the baby during delivery. It also can occur in the urethra (carries urine to penis) in men, doesn’t have symptoms usually. SYMPTOMS: Appear within 5 to 28 days of exposure Women usually have a vaginal discharge that FEMALE SYMPTOMS: Itching and burning at the outside of the opening of the vagina and vulva. Painful and frequent urination Heavy, unpleasant smelling greenish, yellow discharge MALE SYMPTOMS: Usually nothing, or discomfort in urethra, inflamed head of the penis.

33 Trichomoniasis Complications
Women who have been infected are more than twice as likely to develop tubal adhesions that may lead to infertility. Men may develop urethritis (inflammation of the urethra).

34 Candidiasis – Yeast Fungus
Yeast fungus that may or may not be transmitted by sexual intercourse. Caused by high doses of antibiotics. It is usually caused by altering the Ph of the vagina. SYMPTOMS: A thick cheesy vaginal discharge Severe itching

35 NGU An inflammation or infection of the urethra (the tube that carries the urine from the bladder) It is passed from person to person during intimate physical contact. FEMALE SYMPTOMS: Pain Itching or burning around the vagina Any discharge may be a sign of NGU. (because the disease is internal, women sometimes do not show any obvious symptoms.) MALE SYMPTOMS: Discharge from the penis (this may be thin and watery or thick and white) Burning and itching around the opening of the penis Sometimes the signs appear only in the morning, then go away and come back. About 10% of men show no symptoms

36 HIV-Human Immunodeficiency Virus
"H" is for Human, meaning that only humans get this virus. You can’t get infected from a pet or mosquito. "I" is for Immunodeficiency, meaning that this virus causes your immune system to have some serious problems. It makes it easier for you to get sick and harder for you to get well. "V" is for Virus, which refers to the specific type of germ that causes the disease. Unfortunately, viruses can't be killed because they aren't alive. You can't take medicine like an antibiotic to get rid of HIV. Viruses stay with you forever.

37 HIV There are two main ways you get AIDS: Vaginal, oral, anal, etc. sex Sharing drug needles and syringes

38 AIDS Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
HIV is linked to immune system malfunction and ultimately results in the condition known as AIDS. It is the result of a weakened immune system. AIDS is diagnosed when a person tests positive for HIV and also has one or more of the "opportunistic infections" of AIDS (there are 27) and/or has a laboratory marker test of 200 or less T-cells.

39 AIDS Incidence Updated worldwide statistics at the end of 1997 revealed 16,000 new infections a day with over 30 million people now living with HIV/AIDS. 1 in 100 adults in the age group are infected with HIV; but only 1 in 10 infected persons are aware of their HIV status. Symptoms develop within months or sometimes years after exposure.

40 AIDS Symptoms Possible flu-like symptoms following infection, but generally no symptoms during the early phase. A variety of later symptoms include fever, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, diarrhea, swollen lymph nodes, cough, dementia, and skin blotches.

41 AIDS Complications The compromised immune system becomes open to opportunistic infections, ultimately leading to death in most cases. Treatment - Although there is no cure, many of the opportunistic diseases can be treated. New antiviral and combination therapies have also been shown to be remarkably effective in reducing the level of active virus in many individuals.

42 Prevention Abstinence Know your partner Limit your partners
Visit your doctor Always look Keep clean!

43 Remember: People who engage in premarital sex are nearly 50 percent more likely to divorce. 3 million teens contract an STD each year – some of which have no cure, are a leading cause of cervical cancer or can even lead to infertility.
