Take a sticky note from the desk. Write a question you want to know about Deaf people and/or good manners. Post the note on the white board.

Students will get into groups of 3-5 people. Students will look at each situation and discuss what they would think is appropriate. Actors will act out the scene. Mrs. Davis will be the Deaf person.

If I see a Deaf person at a restaurant, what do I do? Don’t assume they know how to sign Don’t assume they know how to lipread Don’t assume the can or cannot speak. If I see two people signing, what do I do? Is It okay if I start signing to get them to notice me?

My friend takes me to a Deaf event, what do I do? I’m learning ASL At a social function, always sign when a Deaf person is in the room or within “eyeshot”. What if I don’t know the sign for a word? A Deaf person signed something different than what Mrs. Davis taught me, what do I do?

How does it work? Do I say “tell him” or “tell her”? Who does the Hearing person look at? How do I know if I’m talking too fast?
