CINAHL: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature Subjects: nursing, allied health, biomedicine, alternative medicine, and consumer health. Indexes books, dissertations, conference proceedings, book chapters, journals, etc. Includes 2,960 journals – over 597 in full text. PDF backfiles to 1981 are also included. Searchable by keyword(s) or phrase in either Basic or Advanced Search.

Beginning Searching: Keywords Advanced search better than basic – Structured search boxes with Boolean/wildcards – Field searching Keyword searching – Anywhere in record (default) – Specific field Search results provide Subject Terms options to help narrow or refine search results.

“Refining” Your Search: Limits Wide variety of limits available: – Type of article – Research area – Language – Age – Full text – Date published – Peer reviewed journals – Research journals

Building and Saving Searches: Search History/Alerts Return to previous search Refine previous search Combine searches Save searches to run later and/or to have email updates sent automatically Print out record of searches performed Put in a personal database

CINAHL Citation Record Easily switch between this & full text Main indexing terms are hyperlinked – Author, journal, etc. – Major & minor subject headings

Saving Results: The Folder Click the “Add to Folder” icon next to an article to temporarily save it within the database – These are remembered in further searches in one session Click “Folder has Items” to see saved articles Can print/save/email individual articles Also can save/email entire searches and collections of articles using MyEBSCOhost

Metasearching Nursing Databases Choose “Databases” tab (top of screen) – Gets to list of all available databases in EBSCO Click boxes next to databases of interest – CINAHL, Health Source: Nursing, PsycInfo, Health Source: Consumer – Click “Continue” to get to search Only keyword searching is available Limits break out by database

What Have We Learned? CINAHL is the primary database for clinical and academic literature in nursing and allied health CINAHL’s limits, subject headings, and journals indexes allow for powerful searching

What Else Have We Learned? About 20% of journals in CINAHL are available with full text Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition is also an excellent option for nursing information You can search multiple EBSCO databases at once to expand options NC Live website links (MedlinePlus, PubMed, etc.) provide useful academic resources for research
