Healing for Everyone Part 2 William P. Wilson MD

How Does God Heal? In my first lecture I said he heals in six ways 1. He heals with this divine power 2. He heals through health professionals 3. He heals with time 4. He heals by giving us the forbearance to bear a “thorn in the flesh”

How Does God Heal? 6. He heals by conforming us to his image spiritually What does Jesus Heal He heals the whole person He heals our bodies He heals our souls (psyche) He heals our spirit

What does God Heal? We have to remember that we are not tripartite we are unity or a system made up of three functional units These three units are a system If one unit goes bad it profoundly influences the other units (1 Corinthians 12:12-26)

What does God Heal? All of us know that the body is subject to all kinds of diseases God can heal them all Unfortunately he doe not heal them often When he does he does so for his glory

Healing the Body It is always possible that God wants to heal our body so it behooves us to pray in faith for healing of any disease. We should not continue our effort if we have not achieved results after fervently praying

Healing the Body James (5:14,15) told us how to pray for the sick Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make them well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Healing the Body If the sickness is localized to a specific part of the body we should lay hands on that part as we pray. Of course there are certain parts that we should not touch! Agnes Sanford always visualized the “healing light of God’s presence focused on the person when she prayed. I have used this from time to time. Pray fervently in the Spirit

Healing the Psyche There are a number of major areas that need healing On of the most common that I encounter is low self esteem These people have a view of their self that is distorted by early life experiences The way this is changed is to teach them who they are in Christ

Who am I in Christ? The Bible makes it plain that I am God’s child I am a son or daughter I am a prince or princess I am a servant Therefore, I am loved unconditionally I am significant I am secure

Who am I in Christ? Neil Anderson’s book Living Free in Christ will detail this for you It is important that a person with low self esteem realize they are believing lies about themselves that they must repudiate. This is done by an act of the will

Who am I in Christ? Another thing to do is to set down with a friend or counselor and make a list of the things you like about yourself and in a separate column list the things you don’t like The friend and counselor can help you identify both characteristics List not only talents, but personality characteristics and spiritual assets

Healing the Psyche A second common problem lies in the emotions There are uncontrolled emotions especially anger There is emotional isolation There is the inability to express or receive love

Healing the Psyche There is a psyche filled with misbeliefs. These can be healed by learning the truth. The source of truth is the Bible When misbeliefs (lies) are corrected the persons emotional life will be changed

Healing the Psyche One of the primary interventions to be used in healing the psyche is what is called inner healing or healing of memories This technique was introduced by Agnes Sanford How is it carried out?

Inner Healing Inner healing is the reeducation of the subconscious All of us have an inner child of the past. This is the sum of all the memories of our childhood especially the painful ones. These memories determine how we perceive and behave in the present, but also what we expect to happen in the future

Inner Healing In this intervention we pray with our eyes closed. We ask God who is the Lord of time to take us back to the place where we had the traumatic experience by visualizing it. We will then relive the experience as it happened originally. We will allow ourselves to experience the emotion that we felt at the time

Inner Healing (cont.) We then ask Jesus what he would do or say in the experience to heal it. If he comes into the visualization we allow him to say what the person thinks he would say and act in a way to heal the emotion

Inner Healing (cont.) Inner healing is most useful in healing post abortion syndromes and unresolved grief. Here we can have the person visualize themselves with the child or loved one. They take or lead them up to the threshold of God’s kingdom and commit them to God for their eternal destiny. They then visualize angels coming and taking the baby/person off into the light of God’s presence.

Confession Repentance and Forgiveness Many people are riddled with shame and its accompanying guilt They need to confess to themselves, God and one other person Their confessor must then seek to lead them into repentance

Repentance Repentance has two aspects One it begins with a godly sorrow Two it is attended to a determination to amend their ways When they have truly repented they can be forgiven

Forgiveness In John 20:23 Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to His disciples and told them that henceforth they could forgive sins or refuse to forgive sins To forgive sins we say, “In Jesus name and by his power you are forgiven!”

Forgiveness In the process of confession and repentance and forgiveness It is important that the person confessing confess to individual sins (Psalm 51:3) and that they be for given individually If the person says that they know God has forgiven them but they cannot forgive themselves help them understand the arrogance of such a statement.

Exhortation An important healing intervention is exhortation Many times life is hard and full of traumatic events It is our job to encourage a person to persevere when they are discouraged

Demonization Satan interacts with persons in several ways He oppresses them He obsesses them He possesses them

Deliverance Although one rarely sees a person who is demonized it is necessary that we realize Satan can possess a person Any mature Christian can deliver a demonized person from the dominion of Satan It is done by asking the demon(s) who he/they is/are and command him in the name of Jesus to depart
