3 Tobacco 101: Module 4 3 Secondhand Smoke Exposure Secondhand smoke is a mixture of gases and fine particles that includes Smoke from a burning cigarette, cigar, or pipe tip Smoke that has been exhaled or breathed out by the person or people smoking I don’t smoke. Why should I be concerned about being around someone who does? Secondhand smoke is dangerous.

4 Tobacco 101: Module 4 4 Secondhand Smoke Exposure You breathe in more than 4,000 chemicals when you are around someone who is smoking. The chemicals found in secondhand smoke hurt your health, and many are known to cause cancer. Is secondhand smoke toxic? Secondhand smoke contains poisons. Permission needed

5 Tobacco 101: Module 4 5 Secondhand Smoke Exposure What problems does secondhand smoke create for youth? Secondhand smoke harms children. Children who are around smoke are more likely to have the following: Lung problems Ear infections Severe asthma

6 Tobacco 101: Module 4 6 Secondhand Smoke Exposure Exposure to tobacco smoke in childhood may be associated with cancer during adulthood. How could it hurt someone when children are still young and healthy? But I don’t feel sick…

7 Tobacco 101: Module 4 7 Secondhand Smoke Exposure The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledges that secondhand smoke exposure can cause blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes. What problems does secondhand smoke create for adults? Secondhand smoke harms adults.

8 Tobacco 101: Module 4 8 Secondhand Smoke Exposure Cats are the most at risk from secondhand smoke because of their grooming habits. Secondhand smoke can cause cancer in dogs. Can my pets be harmed by secondhand smoke? Yes. Secondhand smoke causes health problems in pets.

9 Tobacco 101: Module 4 9 Secondhand Smoke Exposure Tobacco smoke pollution remains after the cigarette has been put out and can be hazardous to the health of infants and young children. Can tobacco smoke still cause harm even after the cigarette has been put out? Yes, cigarettes contain chemicals that linger on surfaces long after the cigarette has been put out.
