Prescribing (Physician) Chapter 17

Objective  Place dispensed and prescribed medications orders

Key Concepts  Dispensed medications  Prescribed medications  ePrescribing

Prescribing Medications  Dispensed medications are those that the medical facility has on hand to provide to the patient  Prescription medications are those for which the patient needs to have a prescription filled at a pharmacy  Meaningful Use Core Objective 4 is ePrescribing which calls for physicians to electronically generate and transmit prescriptions and prescription-related information  Do This! Pg. 215

Ordering Medications using The Problem-Focused Method  Place cursor in Medications field on Visit Documentation screen (Figure 17-1)  At top of screen MedTrak displaces patients allergies to medications which complies with Meaningful Use Core Objective 11  Two ways for physicians to prescribe medications are the same two ways the physician uses to place orders for x-rays or treatments  Click Medications button on Visit documentation screen(Figure 17-2)  Use plus and minus signs to navigate to correct medication hen click green cross to select medication  Do This! Pg. 217

Ordering Medications using The Order Code Method  Second way to place order for medication is to use order code  Order code can be entered directly in Medication Field on Visit Documentation screen  Enter order code in Medication field  Press ENTER key  This method is faster because you just type the name of medication rather than locate it on the medication tree  Order by Code screen appears which reads the code and displays the related order (Figure 17-4)  Click SUBMIT button to confirm this is the correct medication

Order By Code  Next screen is order details screen for the medication displaying number to dispense and directions for taking the medication  MedTrak populates the standard way a physician writes the prescription to save time  This can also be standardized by the medical facility or individual physician  The physician can type over the prescribed amount to change the directions  This screen has the same functionality as Open Orders screen  If wrong medication was ordered click CANCEL ORDER button  Do This! Pg. 221-222

Printing The Patient’s Chart  You will need to print and turn in the patient documentation for the patient you completed in the electronic health record  Do This! Pg. 222

For Prescription Medications  MedTrak includes two questions about samples:  1. How many samples did the physician dispense?  2. What is the lot number of the sample medication?  If there was a recall on the sample medication given to the patient the facility could run a report and see which patients received that lot number of the sample and notify the patients about the recall  To finish ordering click Submit Answers button  MedTrak refreshes Order by Code screen displaying addition of the medication chosen to the right(Figure 17-7)
