2. Definition Essay Assessment Read the assignment for the definition essay Annotate the assignment for important requirements and ask two questions you may have? – Even if you think you know the answer, write two questions.

3. Proposal Write a proposal for your definition essay Make sure to answer all the questions addressed in the proposal section of the assessment – You may use bullets – You may just write 1-2 sentences for each bullet

4. Warm Up Silently!!! Describe all the associations you have with the hand signal I give you. Explain where, when, and why you came to this understanding.

5. Read the Introduction Silently and independently, read the introduction to writing a definition essay on page 506

6. Jigsaw Select one of the following definition essays to read (each group member needs a different essay to read) – Gloria Naylor “The meanings of a Word” p. 517 – Christine Leong “Being a Chink” p. 523 – Thomas Sowell “Needs” p. 530 – Barbara Kingsolver “Rural Delivery” p.534 – Andrea Jones “Identity’s Edge” p.541

7. Read and Take Notes Read your definition essay from start to finish Complete your graphic organizer with implicit or explicit examples – Use paragraph #s and first words for your notes

8. Group Discussion Share your findings and take notes – What is similar? – What is different? – What is true for ALL definition essays? – What can be changed?
