First Wave (1940s) › Marian Chace, “The Grand Dame” of dance therapy › Through her work dance was first introduced to western medicine › 1966 Chace became the first president of the American Dance Therapy Association

Second Wave (1970/80s) › Therapists began to experiment with the psychotherapeutic applications of dance and movement › DMT was then categorized as a form of psychotherapy (personal counseling with a psychotherapist)

Broad education in dance › Modern dance forms to ethnic, folk and social dance styles Education should also include › Choreography, performance and teaching College courses › Kinesiology, Anatomy & Physiology, Psychology Work or volunteer experience › Summer camps, schools, hospitals or nursing homes

Dance/movement therapy graduate programs educate students in the content areas of psychological theory, human development, multicultural perspectives, group process, behavioral research, psychopathology, psychodiagnosis and assessment skills

Graduate from ADTA Approved Dance/Movement Program Alternate Route requires a master's or doctoral degree in a human services- related field in combination with specific dance/movement therapy coursework › counseling, psychology, social work, special education, dance education, a creative arts therapy, family therapy, occupational therapy, psychiatric nursing, or medicine

Registered Dance/Movement Therapist (R-DMT) › Entry level credential › Master's degree › 700 hundred hours of supervised clinical internship Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist (BC-DMT) › Advanced credential › Additional 3,640 hours of supervised clinical work › Passed a rigorous examination

Members of ADTA and R-DMT or BC-DMT credentialed dance/movement therapists are required to adhere to the ADTA Code of Ethics and Standards of Ethical Practice The Standards of Ethical Practice are specific guidelines that serve as a model for professional dance/movement therapy practice The Standards and Ethics Committee serves to protect the public and the profession
