Scientific Notation and Standard Notation 7 th Grade Hawaii Standard 7.1.2 Identify situations that require the use of large numbers and represent them using scientific notation
3
What is Scientific Notation? Scientific notation, means of expressing very large or very small numbers in a compact form that is easy to use in computations. (Columbia Encyclopedia)
4
How do we use Scientific Notation? We use it for really big numbers, like the number of galaxies in our universe: 125 billion or 125,000,000,000 or 1.25 x 10 6 or 1.25 x 10 6
5
We also use it for really small numbers, like the radius of a hydrogen atomWe also use it for really small numbers, like the radius of a hydrogen atom.000000000025 or 2.5 x 10 -11
6
Definitions Scientific Notation: a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten (1 million = 1.0 x 10 6 ) Standard Notation: the way we normally express numbers (1 million = 1,000,000)
7
To Move From Standard to Scientific Notation *Small Numbers have a negative exponent *Big Numbers have a positive exponent 1.Move the decimal to make it a number between 1 and 10 2.Multiply that number by 10 with an exponent 3.The exponent is the number of places you moved the decimal.
8
To Move from Scientific Notation to Standard 1.Move the decimal the number of places of the exponent…Negative exponent is a really small number (move left); Positive exponent is a big number (move right). 2.Add zeros when needed to fill in decimal moves
