2 The Highwayman Read pg 246. Answer these questions:
What is a narrative poem? What is the setting of this poem? Who are the characters? Go over the answers together. Read the white box, “Background” together and discuss.

3 The Highwayman Write down these vocabulary words.
Go through the poem, and, using the footnotes, define each of these words: galleon 6. ostler claret 7. harry rapier hilt casement plaiting priming wicket

4 The Highwayman Let’s find out what the story is in this narrative poem. Watch this version of the poem: This version does not include the fact that the soldiers tie Bess up with a loaded musket. Add that after the video and discuss the poem’s plot.

6 The Highwayman There is a lot more to a narrative poem than just the story. Let’s discover the rhythm and figures of speech contained in this narrative. Get out your Poetry Vocabulary and Definitions list. This is where you can find a copy of the list: Poetry Terms and Definitions

7 The Highwayman Using your list, be prepared to tell me what these figures of speech ‘look’ like. If you can give me an example, that would be GREAT! metaphor 4. personification simile 5. onamatopeia alliteration Have students put a star next to these figures of speech on their lists.

8 The Highwayman Follow along in your book while the narrator reads the poem. Listen for the ‘beat’ of the poem. What does it remind you of? Watch for the figures of speech.
