Vector A software technology that uses mathematical points based on “vectors" (information giving both magnitude and direction). Because the computer has a description of how the image should look, it can be redrawn at any size, in any position, without losing any quality.
3
Nesting Don’t place bitmap/rastor images into vector files (unless it is used as a drawing template). Images placed into Illustrator, unless embedded into the file are “linked”. If you then place this file into InDesign you have a linked image within another linked image, which is referred to as “Nesting”.
4
Bitmap (Raster) Graphics which are edited by modifying individual pixels, each containing specific color information. A pixel is minutely small; a single image may be composed of hundreds of thousands of individual pixels.
5
Formats Vector Graphics Native file format-.ai/Adobe Illustrator.cdr/Corel Draw Import/Place file format- EPS (Encapsulated Post Script) Bitmap Graphics Native file formats-.PSD/Adobe Photoshop Import/Place file format- Tiff (Tagged Image File Format) or EPS (Encapsulated Post Script)
6
Place EPS files Prepress quality resolution, precision, color Based on PostScript language (InDesign displays a jpeg preview) Contain both vector & bitmap graphics. Will not print to a non-PostScript printer Spot colors used are added to your swatch panel in InDesign
7
Place Tiff files Flexible bitmap image format Supported by virtually all painting, image-editing, & page layout applications Most scanners support and produce Tiff images Support CMYK, RGB, grayscale, lab, indexed-color, and bitmap files with alpha and spot-color channels. Spot colors appear in you swatches panel You can use clipping paths created in photoshop
8
Don’t Place PDF files Color in placed PDF images should be embedded along with any color traps, resolutions for bitmapped images, and fonts It is not a standard practice to place PDF files into InDesign, so therefore we will not be using this format for linked images.
