Opening Hymn We sing our opening hymn: Your love surrounds me
Robin Mann (1978) CAL 293

on a dark and stormy night. Though fear is creeping
your love surrounds me   1. Your love surrounds me like a tent around me on a dark and stormy night. Though fear is creeping as the darkness deepens, I will stay beside this light:

your love surrounds me   I will live with you for ever, I will live inside your shelter, I will live with you for ever in the house of God.

your love surrounds me   2. When death was coming, I was helpless, running, but I had no place to hide. O, Jesus heard me crying, Jesus saw me dying, he came to my side:

your love surrounds me   I will live with you for ever, I will live inside your shelter, I will live with you for ever in the house of God.

your love surrounds me   3. You left your Father, O my baby brother, for the manger and the cross. Your death is life for me, you killed my enemy, O, death has finally lost:

your love surrounds me   I will live with you for ever, I will live inside your shelter, I will live with you for ever in the house of God.

your love surrounds me   4. The broken people, and the poor and feeble find a place of shelter here. There’s room for more to come and join the Father’s Son, his love will take your fear:

your love surrounds me   I will live with you for ever, I will live inside your shelter, I will live with you for ever in the house of God. †

FIRST READING R: The first reading for the second Sunday after Epiphany is written in Chapter forty nine of Isaiah beginning at verse one. Isaiah 49: CEV God's servant a light to the nations :

Isaiah 49:1-7 R: The first reading for the second Sunday after Epiphany is written in Chapter forty nine of Isaiah beginning at verse one. Everyone, listen, even you foreign nations across the sea.

Isaiah 49:1-7 The LORD chose me and gave me a name before I was born. 2He made my words pierce like a sharp sword or a pointed arrow; he kept me safely hidden in the palm of his hand.

Isaiah 49:1-7 3The LORD said to me, "Israel, you are my servant; and because of you I will be highly honoured." 4I said to myself, "I'm completely worn out; my time has been wasted. But I did it for the LORD God, and he will reward me.”

Isaiah 49:1-7 5Even before I was born, the LORD God chose me to serve him and to lead back the people of Israel. So the LORD has honoured me and made me strong. 6Now the LORD says to me, "It isn't enough for you to be merely my servant.

Isaiah 49:1-7 You must do more than lead back survivors from the tribes of Israel. I have placed you here as a light for other nations; you must take my saving power to everyone on earth." 7Israel, I am the holy LORD God, the one who rescues you. You are slaves of rulers and of a nation who despises you.

Isaiah 49:1-7 Now this is what I promise: Kings and rulers will honour you by kneeling at your feet. You can trust me! I am your LORD, the holy God of Israel, and you are my chosen ones. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (Epiphany 2) R: The Psalm is Psalm 40 1I patiently waited, LORD, for you to hear my prayer. C: You listened 2and pulled me from a lonely pit full of mud and mire. You let me stand on a rock with my feet firm,

Psalm 40 (CEV) R: 3and you gave me a new song, a song of praise to you. Many will see this, and they will honour and trust you, the LORD God. C: 4You bless all of those who trust you, LORD, and refuse to worship idols or follow false gods.

Psalm 40 (CEV) R: 5You, LORD God, have done many wonderful things, and you have planned marvellous things for us. No one is like you! I would never be able to tell all you have done. C: 6Sacrifices and offerings are not what please you; gifts and payment for sin are not what you demand. But you made me willing to listen and obey.

Psalm 40 (CEV) R: 7And so, I said, "I am here to do what is written about me in the book, where it says, C: 8'I enjoy pleasing you. Your Law is in my heart.' “

Psalm 40 (CEV) R: 9When your people worshiped, you know I told them, "Our LORD always helps!" C: 10When all your people met, I did not keep silent. I said, "Our LORD is kind. He is faithful and caring, and he saves us.”

Psalm 40 (CEV) R: 11You, LORD, never fail to have pity on me; your love and faithfulness always keep me secure. C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

SECOND READING R: The second reading is a special reading as we reflect on the floods, it is written in Chapter one of Second Corinthians beginning at verse one.   2 Corinthians 1: CEV

2 Corinthians 1:1-11 (CEV) From Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle of Jesus Christ, and from Timothy, who is also a follower. To God's church in Corinth and to all of God's people in Achaia. 2I pray that God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you and will bless you with peace!

2 Corinthians 1:1-11 (CEV) 3Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! The Father is a merciful God, who always gives us comfort.  4He comforts us when we are in trouble, so that we can share that same comfort with others in trouble.   5We share in the terrible sufferings of Christ, but also in the wonderful comfort he gives.

2 Corinthians 1:1-11 (CEV) 6We suffer in the hope that you will be comforted and saved. And because we are comforted, you will also be comforted, as you patiently endure suffering like ours.   7You never disappoint us. You suffered as much as we did, and we know that you will be comforted as we were.

2 Corinthians 1:1-11 (CEV) 8My friends, I want you to know what a hard time we had in Asia. Our sufferings were so horrible and so unbearable that death seemed certain.   9In fact, we felt sure that we were going to die. But this made us stop trusting in ourselves and start trusting God, who raises the dead to life.

2 Corinthians 1:1-11 (CEV) 10God saved us from the threat of death, and we are sure that he will do it again and again. 11Please help us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks for the blessings we receive in answer to all these prayers. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

M: The Holy Gospel is Written in Chapter 4 of the Gospel according to St Mark beginning at verse 35.
CEV C: Glory to You O Lord.

Mark 4: (CEV) 35That evening, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the east side."   36So they left the crowd, and his disciples started across the lake with him in the boat. Some other boats followed along.   37Suddenly a windstorm struck the lake. Waves started splashing into the boat, and it was about to sink.

Mark 4: (CEV) 38Jesus was in the back of the boat with his head on a pillow, and he was asleep. His disciples woke him and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we're about to drown?"  39Jesus got up and ordered the wind and the waves to be quiet. The wind stopped, and everything was calm.

Mark 4: (CEV) 40Jesus asked his disciples, "Why were you afraid? Don't you have any faith?" 41Now they were more afraid than ever and said to each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you O Christ.

Prayer after the gospel
M: Lord Jesus Christ, Thank you for revealing yourself as the One who saves us. Help us to follow you and to lead others to you. C: Amen.

NICENE CREED C: We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

NICENE CREED C: For us* and for our salvation
he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. * This means: us human beings

NICENE CREED C: On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

NICENE CREED C: We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

NICENE CREED C: We believe in one holy catholic† and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. † or: Christian; 'catholic' here means 'universal'

Job 12: 5 It's easy to condemn those who are suffering, when you have no troubles.

Luke 13 2Jesus replied: Do you think that these people were worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee just because of what happened to them? 3Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also be killed.

1 Thessalonians 5 (CEV) 15Don't be hateful to people, just because they are hateful to you. Rather, be good to each other and to everyone else.  16Always be joyful   17and never stop praying.   18Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do.
