March 6, 2006 Part 3 – Server Migration Description of migration process Migrating Users & Groups Migrating File Shares Migrating Printers Demos
3
March 6, 2006 Migration Overview Migrate a Windows server to Samba Can migrate several types of service −Domain controller (i.e. logons) −File server −Print server Separate tools for migrating each type of service
4
March 6, 2006 Migration Steps 1.Prepare target Samba server 2.Clean up source Windows server 3.Perform migration 4.Cleanup and testing 5.Swap over service
5
March 6, 2006 Migrating Users & Groups Migration of domain logons Use net rpc vampire tool NT4 and Windows 2000 mixed mode domains only! Samba 4 to support vampire of AD domains
6
March 6, 2006 Prepare Samba Server Start with empty Samba configuration Configure add user/group scripts in smb.conf −add user script −add group script −add user to group script Join to domain as BDC Copy domain SID from domain controller −net rpc getsid -S SERVER
7
March 6, 2006 Clean up Windows Server Remove unused users and groups May need to modify user and group names if migrating to strict POSIX Samba server
8
March 6, 2006 Perform Migration net rpc vampire -S SERVER Muchos output created Probably many error messages Not the most friendly user interface Migrates −Users and groups −Group membership −Passwords −Account status −Password history
9
March 6, 2006 Demo
10
March 6, 2006 Migrating File Shares Replicating a file share −And the share ACL Replicating file and directory structure of a share −And the file and directory ACLs
11
March 6, 2006 File Copying Utilities Windows utilities −robocopy.exe −scopy.exe −Windows Explorer! Linux utilities −smbclient −net share migrate Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit −Untested, may not work
12
March 6, 2006 Perform Migration Clean up unused or unwanted files first net share migrate This tool can migrate: −shares −share security −files and directories −file security
13
March 6, 2006 Demo
14
March 6, 2006 Migrating Printers Use Microsoft's Printer Migrator v3.1 Supported in Samba 3.0.20 and up printmig.exe Backs up and restores −printers −queues −permissions −drivers Very hard to get working
15
March 6, 2006 MS Print Migrator Tips User performing the migration must have admin access to the printer −Grant them the SePrintOperatorPrivilege enable asu support = no Create a share called admin$ −\system32\spool\drivers points at print$ Check that migration user can write to files in the admin$ share Bon chance!
16
March 6, 2006 Migrating Printers Use net rpc printer migrate This tool can migrate −printers −settings −drivers −forms −ACLs
17
March 6, 2006 Migrating Printers (cont) 1.Prepare Samba server 2.Clean up old printers, drivers, etc 3.net rpc printer migrate 4.Profit!
