1 Evolution and Ecology Key Question How do adaptations affect the survival of organisms in their environment? Introduction - Adaptations 1
2
2 Maryland Science Content Standard You need to explain that in any particular environment individual organisms with certain traits are more likely than others to survive and have offspring 3
3
3 Objectives Students will be able to: Identify that adaptations may include variations in structures, behaviors, or physiology (life processes). Describe that adaptation and speciation involve the selection of helpful variations in a population. 2
4
4 Adaptation Activity In Notes title: Can You Hide a Butterfly? Page 24 – Discovery Activity We will read through steps 1-3 and complete them as a class Two students will leave the room and act as the “predators” Extension Questions…Answer in notes in complete sentences! 1.Pre-Activity Question - Hypothesis…explain why you think your butterfly will be difficult to find. 2.Post-Activity Question - Which butterflies were the most difficult to find…why? 3.Extend your thinking - Over time, would the population of these butterflies increase or decrease? 7
5
5 Adaptation Video Open moviemovie List at least 3 organisms and how their adaptation(s) help them survive in their environment. 8
6
6 Exploring Evolution Discussion When do changes in species happen? Are they deliberate? What types of changes are more likely to be passed on and spread through a population? 9
7
7 Conclusion Give an example of how an animal of your choice is adapted to its environment. 10
