Auschwitz This particular camp was located in Oswiecim, Poland. The name “Auschwitz” is simply the German name for Oswiecim.
3
Auschwitz This camp was liberated by the Red Army on January, 27 1945. Auschwitz was established on May, 1940.
4
Auschwitz Roughly 1.1 million people where either killed by disease or Nazi torment in Auschwitz.
5
Auschwitz The purpose of Auschwitz Berkinau was a pure death/extermination camp. All including men, women, and children of all “inferior” races were taken here to be killed and tortured.
6
Auschwitz Auschwitz was not only the largest camp set up by the Nazi’s but also what some Jews called a “safe haven.” They thought with so many people in the camp some could keep a low profile and stay hidden.
7
Bergen-Belsen
8
Bergen-Belsen was located in northwest Germany south of the town Bergen.
9
Bergen-Belsen This camp was set up in 1943. When the allies took control of France the Nazis left the camp which slowly deteriorated over time in approximately 1944-1945.
10
Bergen-Belsen About 50,000 inmates/P.O.W.’s were killed here. Another 30,000 or so were killed by disease before allied troops could get to them.
11
Bergen-Belsen This camp was originally a P.O.W. camp (prisoner of war) but was later in 1943 became a concentration camp for Jews and other “enemies of the state.” This camp, like, Auschwitz was an extermination camp. However, unlike Auschwitz, it was also a labor camp for exclusively “fit” men.
12
Bergen-Belsen Since this camp was somewhat close to Russia sometimes Soviet troops would go on what they called “search and rescue” missions. Where at about midnight they would sneak into the camp and take about 10 prisoners every other day
13
Westerbork
14
This camp was located in the northeastern Netherlands north of the town “Westerbork.”
15
Westerbork Westerbork was set up shortly after Auschwitz in June 1942. The camp was liberated soon after the allies invaded and took control in 1945.
16
Westerbork Merely no deaths occurred here.
17
Westerbork This camp was not an extermination or labor camp. It was simply built to hold prisoners of all kind (POW’s, Jews, traders, etc.) until they were shipped off to Auschwitz.
18
Westerbork It was easier for prisoners to escape here because there weren’t many actual cells to contain them.
19
Ommen
20
This camp was located on the outskirts of Holland.
21
Ommen The camps construction began on June, 13 1941. Prisoners arrived on June, 19 1942. But the camp was not fully active until June, 22 1942.
22
Ommen Many were killed here, however not as much as other camps. About 300,000 total died here.
23
Ommen This was more of a torture camp. Heavy labor made prisoners work to death on a daily basis. All including Men, women, teens, and small children were forced to do meaningless, tedious, and unbearable labor.
24
Ommen Luckily for prisoners at Ommen who had the will to fight on, allied power took control of this camp with little casualties afterwards. Those who had hope made it back to there normal lives after the war.
25
Drancy
26
Drancy is located in the northeast suburb of Paris.
27
Drancy This camp began in August 1941 and liberated by Americans and Canadians in August 1944.
28
Drancy An estimated 70,000 French prisoners died here.
29
Drancy This was a forced labor and extermination camp. This camp was set up for specifically French Jews of all age and gender groups.
30
Drancy Surprisingly this camp lasted so long because it was in France where the allies first invaded on D-Day. This was a small but very inconspicuous camp, due to the fact that it was merely a building that was taken over by Nazis and converted into a concentration camp.
