God’s Great Missionaries Our Goal {5} It would be a mistake this quarter to study these biblical agents as interesting historical figures and leave it at that. Rather, we need to catch the inspiration of their lives and focus on our mission to this dying world.

From Folly to Faith: The Apostle Peter Key Text J OHN 6:68 NIV “ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life’.”

From Folly to Faith: The Apostle Peter Initial Words {98} What we feel is not the final test of what is truth. Emotions are a vital part of the Christian life but not the most important part. Peter was someone whose emotions got him into trouble often than not. Once placed under submission to Jesus, his emotions and zeal became powerful tools for the Lord’s work.

From Folly to Faith: The Apostle Peter Quick Look 1. The Peter of the Gospels (Luke 22:34) 2. The Peter of Acts (John 21:17) 3. The Peter of the Epistles (1 Peter 2:18-23)

From Folly to Faith: The Apostle Peter 1. The Peter of the Gospels L UKE 22:34 NKJV “ ‘ I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know me’.”

1. The Peter of the Gospels The Fisherman {99} “ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” Matthew 4:20 NKJV Something about Jesus was so compelling that Peter was prepared to leave his home and livelihood to follow this itinerant Teacher. We really need to follow Jesus no matter the personal cost. The call of Jesus required total commitment.

1. The Peter of the Gospels Peter’s Folly {101} “Simon Peter struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear.” John 18:10 NKJV Brash, presumptuous, prone to violence, collapsing under pressure, sleeping on the job. Yet, before it was all over, Peter became one of the key leaders in the early Christian church, a powerful evangelist and missionary for Jesus.

From Folly to Faith: The Apostle Peter 2. The Peter of Acts J OHN 21:17 NKJV “ He said to him the third time, ‘Simon … do you love Me? … Feed My sheep.’ ”

2. The Peter of Acts “Feed my sheep” {105} That is exactly what Peter eventually comes to do. “Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’” Acts 2:37 NLT What a powerful testimony to what God can do in the life of someone dedicated to Him.

2. The Peter of Acts “Feed my sheep” {105} The transformation was astounding, and the lesson for us should be obvious. Through the surrender to Christ, Peter became a powerful witness for the Lord. Despite Peter’s numerous mistakes and shortcomings, the Lord was still able to use him as a powerful witness.

From Folly to Faith: The Apostle Peter 3. The Peter of the Epistles 1 P ETER 2:18-23 NKJV “ Servants be submissive to your masters…. For this is commendable … before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.”

3. The Peter of the Epistles “Feed my sheep” Part Two {107} Peter was also the author of two epistles, his way of “feeding the sheep” not just in his own time but for all church history. In a sense, every time we read one of his letters, we are seeing another fulfillment of Christ’s words to His disciple.

3. The Peter of the Epistles “Feed my sheep” Part Two {107} “God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not merely gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless lamb of God.” 1 Pet 1:18, 19 NLT In some ways it is hard to imagine these deep, eloquent words coming from the same man in the Gospels.

3. The Peter of the Epistles “Feed my sheep” Part Two {107} The Peter who once determined that Jesus should never go to the Cross is now the Peter who is proclaiming the Cross as the means of redemption, as the place where Jesus, our Substitute, bore our sins.

From Folly to Faith: The Apostle Peter Final Words {109} The story of Peter is a tribute to what God can do through even the weakest disciple. Jesus harnessed Peter’s passion and good intentions and strengthened him in faith to be a mighty pillar of the early church.
