3 Cold War The cold war was a political and economic struggle between the democratic nations of the West, led by the United States, and the Communist bloc, led by the Soviet Union

4 The “Fighting” Propaganda- in newspapers, on radio and television, in street demonstrations, and at the UN Diplomatic Moves- including international conferences and military alliances Scientific competition- reflected in the development of nuclear weapons and missiles and in space flights Economic competition- especially aid to underdeveloped countries

6 “Fighting Continued” Espionage- conducted by extensive spy rings, intelligence-gathering ships, and data-gathering space vehicles Subversion- By encouraging dissent and disruption within each other's spheres

7 Important Cold War terms Arms race-(Military) the continuing competitive attempt by two or more nations each to have available to it more and more powerful weapons than the other(s) Space race- the competition between nations regarding achievements in the field of space exploration. Iron Curtain- the political, military, and ideological barrier erected by the Soviet Union after World War II to seal off itself and its dependent eastern and central European allies from open contact with the West and other noncommunist areas Soviet UnionWorld War IISoviet UnionWorld War II

8 Major Events in the Cold War Use the timeline to map SOME of the events of the Cold War Feb. 1945- Yalta Conference meeting of FDR, Churchill, Stalin - the 'Big Three' Soviet Union has control of Eastern Europe. The Cold War Begins Aug 1945- Two atomic bombs dropped on Japan, leads to V-J day.

13 November 1989: Berlin Wall is demolished and East Germany allows unrestricted migration to West Germany August 1991: End of Soviet Union and the Cold War Ends
