3
Main Idea/Vocabulary I will choose an appropriate metric unit for measuring length and convert metric units of length. metric system centimeter millimeter meter kilometer

Example 1 Select an Appropriate Unit Which unit would you use to measure the height of a street light pole: millimeter, centimeter, meter, or kilometer? Answer: So, a meter is an appropriate unit of measure. The height of a street light pole is much greater than the width of a pinky finger but much smaller than 6 city blocks.

Example 2 Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units An art project required strips of paper 8 centimeters long. How many millimeters long is each strip?
8
Example 2 Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units You need to convert 8 centimeters to millimeters. A larger unit (cm) is being converted to a smaller unit (mm), so you will multiply. 8 × 10 = 80 Since 1 cm = 10 mm, multiply 8 by 10. Answer: So, 8 cm = 80 mm. The art project required strips of paper 80 millimeters long. 8 cm = mm

Example 3 Convert Smaller Units to Larger Units A high school track measures 250 meters. Luis ran 12 times around the track. How many kilometers did he run? Step 1 Find the length in meters. number of lapslength of one laptotal length 12 250 m3,000 m×=

Example 3 Convert Smaller Units to Larger Units Step 2 Convert 3,000 meters to kilometers. A smaller unit (m) is being converted to a larger unit (km), so you will divide. 3,000 ÷ 1,000 = 3 Since 1,000 m = 1 km, divide 3,000 by 1,000. Answer: So, 3,000 m = 3 km. Luis ran 3 kilometers total around the high school track. 3,000 m = km
