Born in California in 1969 Daughter of Painter Larry Walker Focusing on painting and printmaking, she got a BFA from Atlanta College of Art, and MFA from Massachusetts College of Design. It wasn’t until after she graduated where she began creating her distinctive style

Using black paper-cut out silhouettes to represent themes such as race/racism, desire and shame, narrative and historical (slavery) sexuality and humor. At 28 she was of the the youngest recipients of the MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” Her first full scale solo exhibition was recently in 2007, Kara Walker: My Complement, My Oppressor, My Enemy, My Love
