What? Satellite Communication in the Mobile Environment: Making the Complex Simple 60-minute session – technical content –Live: ~20 participants –Webinar: ~40 participants 1 CEU: A+ or Network+ Open to anyone, not just members Free!

Deliver value to technical constituents Help keep government, military, and industry conversant with new and emerging technologies Engage with your members…and potential new members Why?

What’s next? Cybersecurity Mobile security Cloud computing Consolidation Shared services…?

Session Overview Introduction to LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and GEO (Geosynchronous Earth Orbit) satellites being used for MSS (Mobile Satellite Services) by providers such as Inmarsat, Thuraya and Iridium. Focused on Inmarsat’s BGAN’s (Broadband Global Area Network) service being utilized by the military out in the field, as well as FleetBroadband and Swift Broadband. Secure communications via Lease Lines, ISDN, VPN, MPLS connections with secure devices such as STEs, and KG-84/250, BGAN option to NAT/Modem mode for the IP addresses assigned by network. Discussions on the Inmarsat’s network infrastructure and scenarios on how these services are making our troops’ job a little easier. The speaker will address what information security is in place and what can be added.

Session Outline Inmarsat, Thuraya and Iridium satellites. - Life span and location of these satellites, the different coverage and networks. What are the advantages of LEO or GEO satellites for MSS? What frequencies are used between networks? Inmarsat’s network infrastructure. - What happens when you place a voice call? We will discuss the entire routing of voice calls and internet traffic, from the time you press “call/send” to the point when it connects to its destination. What Information Security is in place and what can be added? Last mile connectivity to the end user’s facility and the combination of Public/Private Static/Dynamic IP addressing. BGAN Services and manufacture. - What is the difference between Streaming and Standard connection? When to use one vs the other. What are the different types of units and who manufacture them? What delays are expected when setting up a video conference or on a voice call? FleetBroadband Services. - How does the antenna keep tracking of the satellite when a vessel is moving? How can we have a network setting onboard the ship? What are the different types and manufactures of FleetBroand units? Swift Broadband Services. - What aircraft are currently using SwiftBroadband? What capabilities are now available when flying overseas? What are the different types of units and who manufactures them?
