2 Shampoo o Purpose o To cleanse the hair and scalp prior to receiving a service o Definition o To subject the scalp & hair to cleaning & massage with some cleansing agent such as soap or detergent; OR a product formulated for cleansing the hair & scalp. The term comes from the Hindi word meaning “to cleanse”

3 Shampooing o Clients allow us to enter their “comfort zone” on a regular basis. The ability to provide a thorough & relaxing shampoo is essential to your success. A good shampoo is the foundation and first impression your client will experience. This service will evaluate your professional expertise as a hairstylist to your client.

4 Considerations o Hair type o Dry, oily, normal, chemically treated o Hair condition o Over-processed; chemically treated; damaged by harsh products, improper care, or exposure to the elements o Home maintenance o Inappropriate products used at home can diminish the quality service you have provided

5 The pH scale o Potential hydrogen – the amount of hydrogen in a solution is measured on a logarithmic scale ranging from 0-14 o 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 o

6 pH scale o Acid o 0 – 6.9 pH o Neutral o 7.0 o Alkaline o 7.1 – 14 o The higher the alkalinity, the stronger & harsher the shampoo which can leave the hair dry & brittle

7 History of pH balanced shampoos o 1960 Jheri Redding founded Redken, Jhirmack, Nexxus, & Jheri Redding Products & marketed the first pH-balanced shampoos. The litmus paper test was key in his marketing strategies.

8 Chemistry of Water Water is the universal solvent, meaning it is capable of dissolving more substances than any other solvent o Purification – fresh water from lakes & streams must be purified for domestic use o Sedimentation o Treatment that causes matter to sink to the bottom o Filtration o Passing through a porous substance, such as filter paper or charcoal. The process removes suspended clay, sand & organic material o Chlorine added o Small amounts are added to kill bacteria

9 Chemistry of Water o Purification o Boiling o 212* Fahrenheit or 100* Celsius, destroys microbes o Distillation o Process of heating water so it becomes a vapor, then condensing the vapor so that it collects as a liquid. This process is used frequently in the manufacture of cosmetics o Soft water o Rain water or chemically softened water. It contains small amounts of minerals & allows soap & shampoo to lather freely o Hard water o Contains minerals that lessen the ability of soap or shampoo to lather readily. Can be softened by a chemical process
