How to find the mean, median, and mode By: George Suggs

MEAN, MEDIAn, And MODE Finding the mean, median, and mode does not have to be difficult. This presentation will teach you the steps to finding each, but first let’s look at the scenario to help you better understand the use of having to find the mean, median, and mode…

MEAN, MEDIAn, And MODE Ms. Collins’ has been trying to loose weight for the last 8 months. Each month she weighs in. The chart below shows her results. MonthWeight January158 lbs February149 lbs March144 lbs April148 lbs May151 lbs June148 lbs July142 lbs August140 lbs She would like to know the mean, median, and mode of her weight loss to help her figure out her overall progress with her diet.

Mean. Defined : The mean is the average or typical result in a given set of data.

Mean Using the data, we will find Ms. Collins’ mean or average weight.. How to: To find the mean (average) you add all numbers together and divide by the total numbers given. STEP 1: add all numbers together 158+149+144+148+151+148+142+140= 1180 STEP 2: Divide answer by the total numbers in all (158+149+144+148+151+148+142+140) = 8 numbers total SO… 1180÷8= 147.5 STEP 3: The answer Ms. Collin’s mean or average weight for 8 months is 147.5 lbs MonthWeight January158 lbs February149 lbs March144 lbs April148 lbs May151 lbs June148 lbs July142 lbs August140 lbs

Median How to: To find the median, you will put the numbers in order from least to greatest (Only write the number once when ordering). If the set is odd, simply take the middle number. If the set is even, average the two middle numbers. Defined: The median is the middle number in a set of data.

Median Now we will use Ms. Collins’ data to find her median or middle weight (Her data results in an odd number) STEP 1: Put numbers in order from least to greatest (only write the number one time). 140, 142, 144, 148 (only once), 149, 151,158 STEP 2: find the middle number 140, 142, 144, 148, 149, 151,158 STEP 3: The answer Ms. Collin’s median or Middle weight for 8 months is 148 lbs MonthWeight January158 lbs February149 lbs March144 lbs April148 lbs May151 lbs June148 lbs July142 lbs August140 lbs

Median Now we will use Ms. Collins’ data to find her median or middle weight (if the data resulted in an even number) STEP 1: Put numbers in order from least to greatest (only write the number one time). 140, 142, 144, 147, 148, 149, 151,158 STEP 2: find the middle numbers 140, 142, 144, 147, 148, 149, 151,158 STEP 3: Average the two middle numbers by adding them and dividing the answer by two. 147+148= 295 295÷2= 147.5 STEP 4: the answer Ms. Collin’s median or Middle weight in this case for 8 months is 147.5 lbs MonthWeight January158 lbs February149 lbs March144 lbs April147 lbs May151 lbs June148 lbs July142 lbs August140 lbs

Mode Defined: The mode is the number in set of data repeated the most times. There can be more than one mode How To: To find the mode you will need to again put the numbers in order from least to greatest (write the number as many times as it appears). The mode(s) will be the number(s) repeated the most.

Mode Lastly, we will find the mode or the number repeated the most in Ms. Collins’ weight data. STEP 1: Put numbers in order from least to greatest (write number as many times as repeated). 140, 142, 144, 148, 148, 149, 151, 158 STEP 2: find the number repeated the most 140, 142, 144, 148, 148, 149, 151, 158 STEP 3: The answer Ms. Collin’s Mode or most repeated weight in this case for 8 months is 148 lbs. NOTE… Remember there can be more than one mode, so if there are several numbers repeated an equal amount of time then they all are the modes. MonthWeight January158 lbs February149 lbs March144 lbs April148 lbs May151 lbs June148 lbs July142 lbs August140 lbs

MEAN, MEDIAn, And MODE Hope this tutorial has helped you better understand the processes in finding the mean, median, and mode of a set of data. Now, for practice find the mean, median, and mode using this scenario… Alex’s bulldog just gave birth to a litter of 7 puppies. Alex has weighed them and wants to the know the mean, median, and mode weights of his new litter. Try to figure out the mean, median, and mode of Alex’s new liter. PuppiesPounds Puppy 11 lb Puppy 22 lbs Puppy 32 lbs Puppy 43 lbs Puppy 51 lbs Puppy 61 lb Puppy 72 lbs

MEAN, MEDIAn, And MODE PuppiesPounds Puppy 11 lb Puppy 22 lbs Puppy 32 lbs Puppy 43 lbs Puppy 51 lbs Puppy 61 lb Puppy 72 lbs Check and see if you got these answers…. Mean or average puppy weight… 1.7 lbs Median or middle puppy weight… 2 lbs Mode or weight(s) repeated the most…1 lb and 2 lbs GREAT JOB!!!!!
