What is a mixture? A MIXTURE is made of two or more pure substances mixed together. Examples of mixtures include: Air, soft drink, lipstick, petrol, jelly, jam or bread.

Different types of mixtures SOLUTIONS Two substances where one dissolves into another. SUSPENSIONS Suspensions are mixtures of a solid in which the particles are so large that they can be seen. COLLOIDS A mixture in which one substance is divided into minute particles (called colloidal particles) and dispersed throughout a second substance. EMULSIONS A fine dispersion of minute droplets of one liquid in another in which it is not soluble or miscible.

3A: Colloids Most of the mixtures we come into contact with daily are neither solutions or suspensions, they are COLLOIDS ! COLLOIDS are mixtures which contain one or more substances spread evenly throughout another substance. They are not clear like solutions but the particles are smaller than those in suspensions. Examples of colloids include: Bread, whipped cream, jelly, shaving foam, smoke and clouds.

3B: Colloids COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING NOTES: Colloids can be mixtures of: Solids spread through a liquid- (examples) Liquids spread through gases – (examples) Solids spread through gases – (examples) Colloids can also be made up of two liquids spread throughout each other. These are called ……………………. A colloid made up of a solid spread through water is called a gelatinous colloid or a ……………………

3C: Colloids A mixture which has tiny droplets of one liquid spread throughout another liquid is called an emulsion. Particles in the emulsion cling together and individual particles do not settle (form a sediment). Examples of these are: Ointments and cosmetic creams There are two types of emulsions and these are:
