The distribution of population The distribution of the population in Majorca is specially concentrated in the littoral and in the cities. More than 50 % of the population of the island concentrates in Palma, which demonstrates the great importance of this city and the centralization of many of the services in the capital of the Balearic Islands.

The distribution of population Part 2 Other important cities are Manacor and Inca, with populations of 34.000 and 24.000 inhabitants respectively. These two cities are important regional, industrial and commercial nuclei. We can also find other cities with 10.000 inhabitants.

The population of Majorca The population of Majorca is higher than 600.000 inhabitants. It grew quickly from the beginning of the 20th century, even if there was a descent of the birthrate in the 60s, which has been compensated with the arrival of a great migratory wave coming from the south of the Iberian peninsula and other countries.

Migratory population Nowadays the population tends to become stable, though still unmigratory phenomena are produced, so much from Europe as of the poorest zones of the Spanish State and of countries in routes of development. Besides it is necessary to bear in mind that the real population in summer overcomes the million inhabitants because of the tourists' great abundance.

Magaluf Magaluf is one of the most important touristic spots in Mallorca. It is on the west coast of the island within the municipal area of Calvià in Palma´s bay, and it is connected to Palma Nova through an appartments and hotels line where, in summertime, thousands of tourists go there to enjoy their holiday by the sea. In Magaluf all activities are devoted to holidays and leisure. There are all kind of facilities, like car, bikes or motorbikes rents, sea trips, water parks, etc. There is also a wide range of restaurants of all kinds, some of them fast-food restaurants and cafeterias which serve simple and economic meals. (The hotels are builted very near the sea)

The tourism in Palma The boom in tourism caused Palma to grow significantly, with repercussions on immigration. In 1960 Majorca received 500,000 visitors, while in 1997 it received 6,739,700. In 2001, more than 19,200,000 people passed through Son Sant Joan Airport in Palma, with an additional 1.5 million arriving by sea.

Images of hotels near the sea Here we can see that some hotels are built near the sea. In Majorca, and all over Spain, it is forbidden to build hotels or houses within the first 100m of coast line.
