5 stages of death By: Sean K an Justin H

Elisabeth Kϋbler-Ross Was a Swiss born psychiatrist, who pioneered near death studies, an author of On Death and Dying Was a 2007 inductee in to the national women's hall of fame, an was a recipient of twenty honorary degrees. She moved to the united states in 1958 to further her studies in New York. Was an instructor at University of Colorado school of medicine in 1962, then later in 65’ she moved to Chicago’s Pritzker school of medicine.

Cont. Kϋbler strongly encouraged hospice care instead of euthanisation, because it prevented people from there unfinished business. One of her biggest wishes was to build a hospice center for infants and children infected with AIDS.

Stage 1 The first stage of dying is denial. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross says denial is a temporary defense for an individual. She says that you feel fine and your in denial that death can not be happening to you.

Stage 2 Once you enter stage 2 you are entering in the Anger stage. When you are in the anger stage you start to lose the feeling of denial and you get new feeling of constant anger and rage.

Stage 3 In stage three you enter the bargaining stage. In this stage the person in somehow trying to postpone their death. The negotiation for an extended life is made with a higher power in exchange for a reformed lifestyle.

Stage 4 During the fourth stage the person enters in the depression stage. In this stage the dying person begins to understand the certainty of death. This process allows the dying person to disconnect oneself from things of love and affection. It is not recommended to attempt to cheer up an individual who is in this stage.

Stage 5 In the final stage you enter the Acceptance stage. In this stage the individual begins to come to terms with his mortality or that of his loved one.

Kubler-Ross on her own theory Kϋbler-ross claims that these steps do not necessarily come in the order that we listed them in. She notes that not all of the steps are experienced by all patients, though she does say that a person who is dying will always experience at least 2 of the 5 stages.

George Bonanno George is a professor at Columbia university, he wrote a book which included sever scientific studies which he and others carried out over 20 years stating that Kϋbler-ross theory of dying is invalid.

Criticism Professors at Yale University wrote letters disproving Kübler Ross’s theory of death. Saying that people don’t experience these stages of death the same. They believed that you only experience one or two.

Criticism cont. Skeptic Magazine published that one goes through stages of grief not dying. Main Critics say that 5 stages of dying are to vague and do not describe the wide range of emotions that people experience during change. Common criticism states that its highly unlikely that people all over the world experience the exact same reactions

Supportive criticism People find it useful in understanding and identifying how people deal with change.
