2 Childhood & Education Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1967, he moved to Jakarta and lived there for four years. However at the age of ten, he moved back to Hawaii and was raised by his maternal grandparents. After he completed high school, he attended Occidental College. Then, he attended Columbia University, graduating with a degree in political science. 4 The 2008 Election In February, 2007, Barack Obama began his run to be the Democratic nominee for president. He was nominated after a close primary race against Hillary Clinton, whose the wife of former president Bill Clinton. Joe Biden was chosen as his vice president (running mate). Barack Obama’s Republican opponent was John McCain. But, in the end Barack Obama won more than the required 270 electoral votes.
