Jeffrey Ho eCycleElectric Sept. 2010

 Taiwanese  20 years LEV related experience including 14 year electric motor experience.  Managing Director of eCycleElectric Taiwan  Past General Manager of Taiwan DC Motor.  Past VP of Engineering of Ultra Motor. 2 Interbike Sep 23, 2010

 Weight  Size  Efficiency  Speed  Torque  Duty cycle  Durability  Cost 3 Interbike Sep 23, 2010

 Weight  In general, 50W/lb is the technology today at a reasonable cost  5 lb for 250W motor and 10 lb for 500 W motor  Size  Must fit in standard front fork width or possible rear dropout width  Pan Cake motor if put in wheel  Efficiency  80% and up during “cruise” is general industry standard 4 Interbike Sep 23, 2010

 Speed  Hub motor is relative low speed motor. Bottom bracket motor speed is OK  Torque in starting/Low speed  30 N-m (max) is minimum requirement  200 lb rider start from 5% slope without pedaling  Duty cycle  Variable load condition instead of steady load.  500 hr min, 1000+ hr is not a difficult target today.  Durability  Environment requirement (water and temperature)  Cost  Range from US$40 for low power (180W) Chinese motor to US$200 (400W) German motor. 5 Interbike Sep 23, 2010

 Rated (continuous) power vs. Max. power  Both are important  Continuous power and maximum torque are more important  Input power vs. Output power  Power requirement  European market: <250W  US Market: <750W  200 lb/2 degree (3.5%) climbing ability for 10 minutes, breezed head wind under 90F: 500W  36V/16A/85+% efficiency=503W 6 Interbike Sep 23, 2010

 Cost  Motor Cost is about the same.  But controller cost are different  More powerful, more expensive (percentage of diff.)  Efficiency  Brushless motor efficiency is higher  Brush motor has better chance for higher torque. (with Lead Acid battery)  Safety Feature  Brushless motor has better safety features.  When controller MOSFET fail, motor just stops  Brushless motor EMC issue in general is less serious. 7 Interbike Sep 23, 2010

 Number of Motors made per year is relative high now.  Still relative low for traditional motor industry.  Future direction for e-bike motor  Improved low speed torque and low speed efficiency  Better reliability but cost will be slightly higher  More selection for High power motor for US market 8 Interbike Sep 23, 2010
