Typing- Web 2.0 tool Why typing skills are important?

When is typing expected? Everyday Essays Research Papers Projects PowerPoints Excel

M-Step/Standardized Assessments M-STEP 3 rd -11 th graders Students starting at 3 rd - 5 th grade are expected to be able to write/type a 5 paragraph essay. Beginning with an Introduction, 2 nd,3 rd,and 4 th paragraph for supporting details and examples, and then a concluding paragraph. Student are also expected to create an outline, drafts, revise, edit, and then do a final write. Can you imagine that for a student who has no typing exposure/ practice!!!!! Or for a student using the peck and find technique! That would be hard work!
5
How an we expect this from our student? The answer is we can’t without proper typing exposure and practice! Typing is a lifelong skills that they will need to be successful! Proper typing skills must be taught starting in Kindergarten/1 st grade if we want children to be efficient at typing by 3 rd grade. Getting Parents Involved Practice in your classroom

Typing in Grades K- 4

My School Scenario My student do not get computer class Since I teach in a Cognitive Impaired (CI) classroom my students are not in the regular special rotation and are left out of computer class. Receive no typing skills practice while in my classroom. Some of my students have typing Occupational Therapy (OT)goals written that I have to work on. I had to figure out how to get them the typing practice they needed Once a week we go to the computer lab and get on Dance Mat Typing and work on our typing skills. How do I have time and where does it fall into the CCSS. By law I have to make the time because it is an OT goal that some of my students need to work on and I also, say that my students need to work on their typing skills, because they do not have computer class.

Typing in the early grades We as educators need make sure that in the early grades K-5 that students are getting a good foundation of knowing the keyboard. Pads and tablets are not the same as the actual keyboard itself. Since the state of Michigan now requires the M-Step assessment to be taken on line we need to be preparing them in Kindergarten through 2nd grade to be able to type efficiently and effectively. Kids need to know how a keyboard works and where the letters on it by the 3rd, since this is when they start taking the M-Step
12
How to teach typing in the early grades Most teachers will respond to this with we don’t have time. I feel that we need to make time since the State test is forcing us to have our students take test on the computers. Most classrooms have access to laptops, desktops, or computer labs. Use typing in English class have the students type their writing a few times a week. Have the students get on the computer for 15-20 minutes and practice typing. In free time have a computer set up with a list with scheduled dates and times for them to practice. For students who finish their work early require them to get on the computer and practice. Typing games are also a fun way for the students to learn how to type. -This will be covered next by Liz

Tablets, IPads, & even phones Usage is growing Less time spent on computers with desktops or laptops Need to find ways to use in educational setting Best used in centers with games My favorites: Montessori Numbers, Endless 123, Endless Reader, Word Wizard, Clifford Be Big with Words Can suggest educational apps to parents for their phones Waiting rooms or in line
15
Why we need keyboards Either on laptops or desktops We need to teach with full keyboards because: –Required to use word processor at home for assignments –Required to be able to surf internet effectively for homework research assignments We wouldn’t give students math homework with techniques not taught, why should they be required to use technology not taught?
16
My School Scenario Children are required to type assignments by 3 rd grade No formal typing taught in the school until 5 th Classroom teacher needs to teach typing with keyboards- no “hunt and peck” typing on tablets Can teach typing in classroom through use of games
