Atmospheric depression (air rising) – 1.a depression passing over a sea means there is low pressure in the area. 2.This allows the water level to rise (directly beneath the depression) whilst the surrounding waters remain at ‘normal’ level. 3.This forms a bulge in the sea which will travel with the depression as it moves (in this case, southwards via the North Sea).

6. Other factors: High winds – ‘whip’ up the waves causing them to be bigger and more powerful. High tides – due to time of year and location of the moon, tides are high. This means sea level is higher than normal.
