Bell Quiz 1) Prohibition made the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages illegal. 2) Shorter dresses, high heels, short dyed hair, smoking, drinking, “open” discussions, against marriage, employment. 3) $4.5 billion spent on entertainment. 4) 40% of American homes had radios.

The Roaring 20s The 1920's were a prosperous time. Jazz Age The Age of Wonderful Nonsense.

Prohibition 18th Amendment passed the Act of Prohibition. The making of, the transportation of, and the selling of alcohol illegal.

Prohibition This gave rise to Organized crime. Gangsters profited by smuggling alcohol and then selling it to businesses. Alcohol was then provided at illegal bars called Speakeasies.

The Rise of Fashion Women Changed their dress as compared to earlier styles. Most famous were called Flappers. Flappers were considered rebels. They had short sleek hair, shorter shift dress. They exposed their legs in public.

The Rise of Fashion Men- fashion came from the gangster or other heroes. Baggy pants, polished shoes, and a handkerchief in the pocket. This look would be called “Dapper”.

Change in Society One thing to consider is that in this time women's roles changed. They received the right to vote (19 th Amendment). They took the same jobs as men, but still fought for equality.

Entertainment Radio- Main form of Entertainment, Entire families would gather around the radio. Movies “talkies”- Silent movies when sound was finally added. Ben Hur Treasure Island

A time of inventions The most important being the Automobile. Henry Ford began mass production of the "Model T“ This made it cheep and affordable so that every man could afford one. More importantly this made America Mobile.

Politics The Red Scare was about worker (socialist) revolution and political radicalism taking hold in the United States. The people didn’t want the U.S to fall into chaos like Russia.

The Solution The solution was simple gather up the trouble makers and send them home. The most famous rounding up of trouble makers would be the Palmer Raids. The Palmer Raids were a series of raids intended to capture, arrest and deport radical leftists, especially anarchists and Socialist. The raids and arrests occurred in November 1919 and January 1920, more than 500 foreign citizens were deported, including a number of prominent leftist leaders.

More on Politics (Education) The Monkey Trial, also called the Scopes Trial. In 1925 a high school teacher, John Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach human evolution in school.

The Monkey Trial continued Scopes was found guilty and fined $100. The case was seen as contest and a trial on whether science regarding creation/evolution controversy should be taught in schools. An item we still argue today!

An age of Hero’s This age would be seen as a age of many hero’s. Everything from sports, music to flight.

Charles Lindbergh Made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh's heroic flight thrilled people throughout the world.

Amelia Earhart First female aviator to cross the Atlantic Ocean. She disappeared in 1937 in an attempt to be the first woman to fly around the world.

Babe Ruth Consider to the greatest baseball player. His record of 714 regular-season home runs wasn't broken until 1974. He hit 60 home runs in the 1927 season alone-A record that wouldn’t be broke until 1961.
