What Is It? Content Management Systems(CMS) describes software that manage content, workflow, and collaboration online and or in the workplace. CMS present businesses of all shapes, sizes, and industries with powerful means of creating and maintaining their own website and online content.

Enterprise CMS This type of CMS refers to the means of organizing and storing an organization's documents, and other content, that relate to a company’s processes. Companies typically use CMS software to store and retrieve information related to the company. This makes it easier and more efficient to handle and direct the day-to-day affairs of an organization.

Web CMS This CMS refers to the management of data related to a website. Web CMS software system provide website authoring, collaboration and administration tools designed to manage a site. Web CMS software are important because they simplify the production and publication of content on a website.

Web Group CMS Also known as Group Management Systems(GMS), this type of Content Management is very similar to Web CMS. The main difference is that this CMS allows groups of people—usually developers and managers of a company—to work on a project online.

Component CMS This type of CMS manages content at a granular level (component) rather than at the document level. Component content management is more of a methodology for managing content, not necessarily a type of content management system. Each component represents a single topic, concept or asset (e.g., image, table, product description). Components are assembled into multiple content assemblies or content types.

Other Advantages of Web CMS Content Management Software are easy to use. Allows for users or companies to update and control contents of their websites without needing to know complex programming languages. Many CMS software are open source. Many can be downloaded from the internet.
