Physical properties Traits that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter. Used to observe and describe matter.

Chemical properties Describes how a substance will react with another substance to form new materials. Cannot be observed without changing the original material.

It is a chemical change if one is observed: A change in colour.
When new substances with new properties are formed – a chemical reaction has happened. It is a chemical change if one is observed: A change in colour. A change in smell. 3. Fizzing or bubbling (a gas is being made)

Oxygen gas - place a glowing splint in to a small amount of the unknown gas.
If the splint relights the gas is oxygen.

Hydrogen gas - place a flaming splint into a small amount of the unknown gas.
If it "pops" then the gas is hydrogen.

4. A new solid forms from a mixture of liquids or the mixture goes cloudy.
This is called precipitate formation. A change in temperature Reaction products light.
