5 Inside Vatican City The Vatican is actually a City State and is the smallest recognized independent state in the world. The Holy See is distinct from the Vatican because rather than being just a location, it is the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome. The Basilica of St. Peter is actually the cathedral of Rome, which means it is the “chair” upon which the Bishop of Rome sits. The Bishop of Rome is the Pope. 7 Our Current Pope Our current pope is Pope Francis. Like every pope before him, he is also known as the Vicar of Christ on Earth, the Roman Pontiff, and the Holy Father. He was elected pope on March 13, 2013. Pope Francis has given many speeches and written words of wisdom to the faithful. 8 Vocabulary Cathedral – from the word “cathedra” meaning “seat” in Greek, is a term indicating a church that contains the seat of a bishop, thus serving as the central church of a diocese. Basilica – a term that typically refers to large prominent churches that have been given special ceremonial rights by the pope. Vicar of Christ – a title of the pope implying his supreme and universal primacy, both of honor and of jurisdiction, over the Church of Christ. Other titles of the pope include Roman Pontiff, Sovereign Pontiff, Holy Father, Bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter. Holy See – central governing body of the Catholic Church, which is distinct from the Vatican. Vatican City – officially a Vatican City State and also known as simply “the Vatican”, is a walled-in city within the city of Rome. It is the residence of the Roman Pontiff.
