The Holy See is distinct from the Vatican because rather than being just a location, it is the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome. 8. Vocabulary Cathedral – from the word “cathedra” meaning “seat” in Greek, is a term indicating a church that contains the seat of a bishop, thus serving as the central church of a diocese. Basilica – a term that typically refers to large prominent churches that have been given special ceremonial rights by the pope. Vicar of Christ – a title of the pope implying his supreme and universal primacy, both of honor and of jurisdiction, over the Church of Christ. Other titles of the pope include Roman Pontiff, Sovereign Pontiff, Holy Father, Bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter.
