How did it begin? - Disagreement over a possible trade deal with the European Union (EU) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych against the deal; wants closer relationship with Russia. - Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians protest in Kiev. - Violence between police and protesters.

The Ukrainian Conflict The result: - Violence leads protestors to seize government buildings. - Yanukovych leaves the country and a new president is chosen. - Pro-Russian gunmen take control of Crimea which has a majority Russian population - Putin approves Russian military force in Ukraine - Crimea holds a referendum to separate from Ukraine and join Russia

The Ukrainian Conflict The result: - The USA and Europe decide on economic sanctions against Russia - Fighting between Ukrainian and Pro-Russian forces throughout the country, including cities in the east. - Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 is shot down; 298 people die. - On September 5 th, Ukraine and pro-Russian forces agree to a cease-fire
