Magnitude Richter scale Destruction Where earthquakes happen Earthquakes in China chart Vocabulary Bibliography
5
Magnitude is the greatness of size or amount of an earthquake. Depending on the magnitude it will determine how bad an earthquake will be.
6
Less than 4.3 No damage 4.4 - 4.8 Small unstable objects are moved. Dishes or glasses may be broken. 4.9 - 5.4 Damage slight. Windows, dishes, and glasses may be broken. Furniture moved. Weak masonry cracked.
7
5.5 - 6.1 Structural damage considerable 6.6 - 6.9 Structural damage severe. 7.0 - 7.3 Most masonry and frame structure foundations destroyed. Some well built wooden structures and bridges destroyed.
8
7.4 - 8.1 Few or no masonry structures remain standing. Bridges destroyed. Underground pipelines completely destroyed. 8.1-Greater Damage nearly total.
10
The destruction of an earthquake depends on its magnitude on the Richter scale. Some scientist believe that earthquakes kill no body, but we are killed by our own structures collapsing or falling on us.
11
Earthquakes happen where two Tectonic Plates meet. It happens when the two plates rub against each other.

Magnitude: greatness in size or extent Richter Scale: a scale, ranging from 1 to 10, for indicating the intensity of an earthquake. Masonry: stonework or brickwork Structures: something built or constructed, as a building, bridge, or dam Tectonic Plates: The dozen or so plates that make up the surface of the Earth,
