BACKGROUND The International Space Station took 10 years and over 30 missions to assemble. The space station is approximately the size of a football field: a 460-ton, permanently crewed platform orbiting 240 miles above Earth. As the Space Age began in the 1950s, designs of “space planes” and stations dominated popular media.

FACTS The International Space Station marked its 10th anniversary of continuous human occupation on Nov. 2, 2010. Since Expedition 1, which launched Oct. 31, 2000, and docked Nov. 2, the space station has been visited by 215 individuals. At the time of the anniversary, the station’s odometer read more than 1.5 billion statute miles (the equivalent of eight round trips to the Sun), over the course of 57,361 orbits around the Earth.

STATISTICS The International Space Station is not only an orbiting laboratory, but also a space port for a variety of international spacecraft. As of November 2014, there have been: 100 Russian launches 37 Space Shuttle launches 1 test flight and 3 operational flights by SpaceX’s Dragon 1 test flight and 2 operational flight by Orbital Science’s Cygnus 4 Japanese HTVs 5 European ATVs

The ISS solar array surface area could cover the U.S. Senate Chamber three times over. ISS is larger than a six-bedroom house. ISS has an internal pressurized volume of 32,333 cubic feet, or equal that of a Boeing 747. The solar array wingspan (240 feet) is longer than that of a Boeing 777 200/300 model, which is 212 feet. Fifty-two computers control the systems on the ISS. More than 115 space flights were conducted on five different types of launch vehicles over the course of the station’s construction.

PROPOSED PLAN The module I would like to create would be known as the Journey module. It would be an observatory module, containing docking ports for spacecraft. Primarily it would be used to storage and monitoring systems. As well as being equipped with robots which control window shutters and robotic arms.

STEP 1 The first step to building this module was to create a foundation. The bottom of the module will be used for the storage and to monitor systems aboard the station as well as the Earth.

STEP 2 On my module I wanted to have an observation feature as well as a docking port. The wings on the outside serve as the port, while the top is a translucent roof.

STEP 3 To continue the theme of observation I then built windows for the lower part of the module.
