Metal Work Tools 2

Cold Chisel Cold Chisels are normally made from High Carbon Steel. They are made in a wide variety of sizes and normally used to cut metal. Never use a chisel with a mushroom head as bits may break off when hit with a hammer Cold Chisels can also be used to cut Brick/Concrete Always wear goggles when using this tool

Rivet Set & Snap The Rivet Set & Snap is used when during the process of riveting metal. For more details on this process look in S2 Revision Notes Trowel slideshow

Hand Countersink The Hand countersink is used to remove the Burr (sharp edge) from a drilled hole.

Tin Snips Heavy Duty Tin Snips Tin Snips Jewellers Snips (for light work) Tinsnips are used to cut sheet metal. They can be used in your hand “like scissors” but it’s easier to use them fixed in the vice as shown to the right

Mole Grips Locking Lever Release Lever Adjustment screw Mole Grips, sometimes called self grip pliers can be used to grip any shape, even round bar. The locking mechanism on the handle gives a much stronger grip than ordinary pliers Mole Grips in use

Long Nose Pliers Diagonal Cutters Engineers Pilers Pliers Engineers pliers are Multi purpose pliers used for gripping small objects and cutting fine wire Long Nose pliers are Multi purpose pliers used for working in tight areas and cutting fine wire Diagonal Cutters are used to cut wire.

Adjustable Spanners Adjustable spanners will fit any nut/bolt up to 34mm in size. While an adjustable spanner is a useful tool to have in a toolbox it is always preferable to use an normal spanner as this is less likely to round the corners of a nut or bolt.

Stillson Wrench The Stillson wrench has a drop forged body with hardened steel jaws. This tool is especially useful for gripping round objects like pipe. Stillson in use

End Cutters End Cutters are used to cut rivets to the correct length

Water Pump Pliers Water pump pliers are designed with a pivoting hinge that allows the pliers to open very rapidly to accommodate a wide range of diameters. These pliers will grip both round bar and hexagonal nuts

Repousse Hammer The Repousse Hammer can be used to produce a dimpled pattern on a metal surface

Small Socket Set The small socket set can be used to undo nuts and bolts

Letter/Number Punches Letter stamps can be used to stamp your name on soft metals. When using the letter stamps make sure that.. 1.You are working on a hard surface (an anvil) 2. The lettering on the stamp is facing you 3. You strike the stamp with one firm blow. Anvil Lettering

Toolmakers Clamp The Toolmakers clamp can be used to hold small pieces of work while working on them. In the picture on the right the Toolmakers clamp is being used to hold rails in place while adhesive sets.

Parallel Punches Parallel Punches are often used remove split pins from holes.
