3 This theory is used to understand what motivates people

4 How can we use this theory?

5 To motivate human behavior…

6 …and to identify what drives the people …

7 … and to implement change initiatives.

8 Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory

9 Physiological needs Are the physical requirements for human survival.

10 Example: Air, water, and food are metabolic requirements.

11 Safety Needs When physical needs relatively satisfied, the individual's safety needs take precedence and dominate behavior.

12 Including: Personal and financial security Health and well-being Safety net against accidents/illness and adverse impacts

13 Example: A women needs to be protected and secured out of any crime.

14 Love and belonging needs The third level of human needs is interpersonal and involves feelings of belongingness.

15 Example : friends, family, spouse, lover

16 Self-Esteem Needs Self- esteem presents the typical human desire to be accepted and valued by others

17 2 versions of self-esteem: The lower version is the need for respect from others The higher version manifests itself as the need for self-respect

18 Example: A man have a need for strength, mastery, self-confidence and freedom. Lack of these needs may lead to a weakness or helplessness.

19 Self-actualization Realizing potential, fulfillment, seeking growth and high experiences.

20 Example: One girl might have the strong desire to become an ideal mother. For others, it may be expressed in arts or sports.
