27. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS When he arrived, people were ALREADY living there. Believing he was in India, Columbus called them INDIANS… a term that is STILL used to this day.

29. So in reality…. Columbus DID NOT “discover” AMERICA. As some give him credit for doing. The Native Americans were exploited and enslaved by the Europeans until they eventually died off.

42. MIDDLE PASSAGE The trip on the slave ships would last anywhere from 3 to 4 months. Ships were over packed and many Africans died along the way from starvation, disease, sickness, suicide, and exhaustion. Some of the women were even RAPED!

48. SUGAR CANE Sugar Cane fields were primarily in the Caribbean islands and the slaves produced the world’s supply of sugar during that time period.

49. MOLASSES Molasses was extracted from sugar cane and used to sweeten the rum created in Europe.

50. INDIGO Indigo is a plant where you can extract a bluish dye from. Indigo was used for color in making clothes.

51. COTTON Cotton was the main cash crop in the South. Cotton plants are low to the ground and takes a lot of work to pluck out the seeds.

52. TOBACCO Tobacco is grown in the fields and is the main ingredient in cigarettes and cigars. Virginia is the main region slaves harvested tobacco

53. RICE Rice is grown in the fields and takes a long process to harvest. Slaves picked rice in the South Carolina region.
