1 st grade Math BY: MCKINZIE, JEFFERY AND JONNA

Common Core State Standards 1.OA.D.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true or false? 6=6? 7=8? 5+2=2+5? 4+1=5+2

Common Core State Standards Below are links to the common core state standards and a helpful common core app for your mobile devices! http://dese.mo.gov/ https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/common-core- standards/id439424555?mt=8

Materials and Resources Ipads Computers Smart board

Anticipatory Set Game: www.pbskids.org/peg/gameswww.pbskids.org/peg/games How to play: The children have the opportunity to race different cars against the computers, but, before they can race the cars, the children are asked to fill them up with gas and have to use simple addition to guess how much the car needs to be full. After filling up the car, they get to race against the computer to the finish line and then put the racers in order according to how they finished.

Input What do my students already know? Using http://www.twiddla.com/ Ask students to draw an equal sign on their IPad Ask students to draw a plus sign on their IPad Ask students to draw a subtraction sign on their IPad Ask students to write an addition problem on their IPad and solve it. Check your students work and see what they come up with.

Model First, Teacher will demonstrate problems on the SMART board using www.twiddla.com Then, each student will get a chance to come up to the smart board and complete either an addition or subtraction problem with the teacher on the smart board Have the rest of your students at their table write their answer to the problem on the board on their IPad using twiddla. Ask your class “thumbs up or thumbs down” if Charlie answered the problem on the smart board correctly? * Informal Assessment

Check for understanding Ask and recall questions from previous slide Have students complete a worksheet on their own. Addition worksheet: “Mixed dots” * Formal Assessment

Guided Practice As the teacher models a problem from the subtraction worksheet “my math” on the board Students are able to model half of the worksheet together in class with their teacher If they answered incorrectly they are able to fix it. Students do half of the worksheet in class and take the other half home for homework.

Closure Game: “Marble Math Addition” http://www.abcya.com/addition.htm Game: “Subtraction Fishing” http://www.softschools.com/math/games/subtraction_games/ * This can be done individually on IPads or individual computers or if you have extra time before your whole class can participate. Also, meet Peg + Cat! http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/5298975b-6d18-4314- b929-209661ba1e01/add-1-peg-cat/

Independent Practice Students will take the rest of their (guided practice) worksheet home for homework. * Authentic Assessment The students will need to return it to their teacher the next morning completed! 17 Technology and Assessments Informal assessment: in the modeling section of our lesson plan we will have our students watch the teacher complete a math problem on the smart board. Then, teacher will ask students if the problem is true or false. Teacher will ask class to show thumbs up if the problem is correct and thumbs down if it is incorrect. This is showing the teacher if students understand the basics of the lesson. The teacher will be able to see if students are ready to move on or not. Formal assessment: in the check for understanding section of our lesson plan we have a worksheet for students to complete. Students will complete this worksheet on their own. Authentic assessment: in the independent practice section we will have our students take the rest of their “guided practice” worksheet home for homework and it will be due the following day. Students will receive a grade for this worksheet.

Methods of Incorporating Technology For our lesson plan we incorporated the use of iPads, a Smart Board, PDF Files, Microsoft Excel, and the internet. The iPads were a great way to get the students involved. With the iPads each student is able to respond to what is presented on the Smart Board. We used the Smart Board as a way to present activities and information to the students. The Smart Board is easy for the entire class to see. We used PDF files for our worksheets. Our grade book was created in Microsoft Excel and we shall use the internet throughout the lesson to access websites and activities.

Technology Choices Throughout our lesson, we will be using a variety of technologies such as iPads/Computers, a SMART Board, PDF files, Microsoft Excel, and the Internet. iPad/Computer – The students will use their iPads or computers to participate in activities and games. In this particular lesson, the students will use their devices to answer problems that are presented to them via the SMART Board. SMART Board – As previously mentioned, the SMART Board will be used by the teacher to present questions to the students. In addition, the SMART Board will be used for the teacher to demonstrate how to solve the problems and the students will also get a chance to come up to the SMART Board and complete either an addition or subtraction problem. PDF Files – Students will be given worksheets to complete on their own and with some help from the teacher. These documents were saved as PDF files so that they can be opened and printed regardless of application software, hardware, or operating systems. Microsoft Excel – The grade book for the class is kept up to date using Microsoft Excel. This makes for quick and simple management of students’ grades. Internet – The internet will be used throughout this lesson to access different websites and resources such as videos, activities, and games.
